As the Celtics are going to win their next 24 games, this whole lottery discussion is moot....trade the pick.
It's not moot. We are bound to land some good talent with the 15th and 19th picks.
not necessarily. Could nab a JR Giddens and Fab Melo with the picks.
Let's split the difference and say we land a Rajon Rondo or a Jared Sullinger with one and a JR Giddens or a Fab Melo with the other. That seems like a fair compromise between optimism and pessimism.
Haha! Well, I can't say there'll be anyone as good as Rondo or Sullinger, but I guarantee there's no one in that range as bad as Giddens and Melo. To reach that level in this draft I'd say you need to starting looking in the late 30's...barring disaster or incompetence mind you.
My guess is you are wrong. My guess is, and it is just a guess but I think its a fairly good one, but my guess is that there will be at least one player that will be absolutely as big a failure and bust as Melo or Giddens taken somewhere between 1 and 15.
I disagree, Nick. For anyone taken in the top 15 this year to be as bad as those guys would be a complete outlier relative to recent history.
Melo is out of the league after playing a total of 36 minutes of NBA ball. Giddens played a total of 247 minutes.
In the last ten drafts leading up to 2012, exactly zero players (out of 150 total) taken in the top 15 have played fewer than 247 minutes in their careers. None.
There are other metrics of course but I think by any standard there are but a couple of players out of those 150 who've been as bad as those two. I can't find one, to be honest.
You can go take a look here.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_2012.html(In fact I think you can argue pretty easily that setting aside a few guys who never played due to injury, and a couple of guys who stayed in Europe, Melo and Giddens are two of the worst 3-5 first round picks of the last decade, out of 300 or so total players taken.)
