congrats to Chris Johnson for earning a full year contract!  always good to get cheap decent depth to the roster.  AB is hurt again or is it just a tweak?  Either way I can understand this move in that context.

I think DA will make a move soon.  It would surprise me more if he didn't.

Hopefully, this includes at least one unguaranteed season after this, so that Johnson can potentially be included as filler in a trade, if needed, and so that we don't see another Stiemsma-like situation if he plays great for the rest of the season.

Johnson has become an important part of the rotation.  It was a no brainer for them to resign him for the rest of the season.  They still have one roster spot for flexibility if they have any trades in the works, but I think signing Johnson is completely separate.  He is just a guy who earned a contract.

I'm OK with it; means that he's either a really good player, or that team-minus-CJ was probably good enough to get the win regardless. It's really valuable to have a solid player on a bargain contract when you're trying to get good again.

I'm pretty sure that since we only have one guard guaranteed for next year, he can try out for a contract from us, too.

Bradley, RFA, Bogans, gone, Pressey, non-guaranteed, Bayless expiring...and Rondo.

Big decision coming on Bradley re: salary + years; it would be good to have CJ and Pressey both on a very, very cheap deal for next year if they continue to look good. 

CJ sure has range and ain't afraid to use it. 

Pressey/Johnson off the bench, both on minimum deals?  Bargain space savers.

If you are going to move someone like Humphries in a deadline deal, the other team is probably going to have to send back multiple players in order to match salaries, so you need extra roster spots to do something like a 3-for-1 deal, even if you were planning on immediately waiving some of those players.

It is possible that signing Johnson ends up killing the flexibility needed to move a veteran like Humphries or Bass.

Yeah, it really doesn't matter.  Johnson will be making the prorated rookie minimum.  It's like a good night out for Wyc.

If a trade comes along where they need the extra roster spot, they will just cut Johnson.  But in the meantime, they need to field a team.  I know the perception is that they are tanking and everything, but I don't think anyone wants to see Brandon Bass playing SG if a couple more injuries hit the backcourt again. 

Or put it another way, this team desperately needed depth at the SG spot after the trades they made, and they would be filling that spot on the roster anyways to do that.  So, it makes sense to do it with a kid who is playing well, and who works his butt off.

I guess not.  I suppose I'm just trying to undercut any notion some might have that this signals that the team looks at Johnson as a player to hold onto long term, because I have a feeling that if the team didn't expect any changes to the roster over the next two weeks it might not make sense to hold onto him at all.

But yeah, this signing might have nothing to do with what Danny thinks he's gonna do in the next couple of weeks.
