Josh Smith went 1/16 outside 3 feet. 5/20 overall.

But 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals.

I have a feeling he'll be as frustrating, if not more, than JG. A different kind of frustration but nonetheless frustrating. Less hopeless exasperation and more hair pulling frustration.

With his trade value being complete junk (?)...I'd love to take a gamble.

Grass is always greener, I guess.
at this point, Josh Smith is reminding me a lot of Antoine.

- competitive
- good ball-handling forward
- good rebounder
- bad shot selection that could be reinforced by making their first outside shot and bricking the next 10
-tantalizing talent that never quite reaches what it could be
Antoine wasn't a good rebounder from the day he got his first big contract.
Antoine was a good rebounder when he chose to be or when we needed a clutch defensive rebound after that contract.
I honestly don't remember all that many clutch rebounds from Antoine.

He rebounded like Brandon Bass after his second year in the league. I'm sure Bass has gotten some clutch defensive rebounds too, but in the end neither player got nearly enough.

He was a bad rebounder.

Josh can do a lot of things on All Star level ......when he puts his mind to it and plays with basketball high IQ .

Trouble is ......all this doesn't happen near enough through out a season for the money he demands......

He would be either hated or loved in Boston...no in between

Here is my new perfect world scenario.

1. Trade Green, Vitor, and Pressey for Josh Smith
2. Get lucky in the lottery and get the #3 and #16 picks
3. Draft Parker or Wiggins at #3
4. On Draft day trade Sullinger, Bass, Bogans, #16 pick, 2015 Clippers pick, 2016 Nets pick (maybe top 5 protected) for Marc Gasol
5. Sign Pierce for the MLE
6. Resign Bradley to 3 year/$19 million deal with player option for year 3 (basically the same deal Gerald Henderson...a comparable player...got)

Go into next year with a rotation of Rondo/Bradley/Pierce/Smith/Gasol, with Parker/Wiggins, Kelly, and Wallace coming off the bench (or you could bring Pierce off the bench, but I think he probably starts).  And they would still have a few more assets, with the Nets 2017 pick, the Philly 2015 pick, and all of their own picks, as well as the TPE.

That team would have a bit of everything.  They should be nasty defensively, with a pesky backcourt and two elite defenders up front.  They might not light it up offensively, but they don't really have any major weak links.  And they still have a bright future, bringing in a potential star to learn how to win.

Has Memphis given any indication that they're looking to rebuild, though? From the moves they've made, it looks to me right now like they're trying to build around Gasol rather than deal him.

Edit: And the odd protection they've got on their outgoing 2015 pick indicates to me they're not heading towards a rebuild. They'd have to give it up if it fell between 6-14. They'd look stupid trading Gasol, getting the 6th pick in the '15 draft, and having it go to Cleveland.

You've convinced me. I am 100% in on this idea.

Boy, this didn't take long. Anyone interested?

I would think if Rondo is in the team's long-term plans, then Smoove could make a lot of sense. Thoughts?

http://www.celticslife.com/2014/02/report-josh-smith-on-block-could-deal.html

Definitely not now.  When we were adding Josh Smith to a team core that had PP, KG, Rondo, Ray, etc. he would have been a missing piece to a playoff team to guard Lebron.

Now with his new jumbo contract and the fact that Sully is blossoming into a starting PF.  There's no room for Josh Smith at the inn.  The Celtics need to conserve their cap space and stick with cheaper younger players.

Pure speculation, as everything is at this point.  But this IS Memphis we are talking about, and Gasol is going into his walk year.  If he does not give them a firm indication that he wants to stay there beyond next year, I think they will look to cash out while they can.

Memphis is in a tough place, because they seem to be on the downside of their brief arch, and they are going to have to retool sooner or later.  They would obviously prefer to just deal Randolph and keep Gasol, but much like the older Gasol, if Marc doesn't indicate he wants to stay longterm, then they might need to move him as well.  And a young, productive big man like Sully, expiring contracts, and three first round picks would be a very good haul.

That really is a good haul. I don't see how Memphis would turn this down. Your scenarios are all very realistic - bordering on the edge of the Cs getting the short end. Everyone here loves Marc Gasol and rightfully so. His stats aren't elite, but he is an excellent positional player - always seems to do the right thing.

I will say, though, if we are willing to give up three firsts and Sully for a total impact player, teams other than Memphis maybe knocking on our door.

Right.  But I think you overpay for quality and fit.  And I think in a scenario like this, you can overpay a bit to set up a situation where you have an immediate contender that also has the potential to get better with a blue chip rookie.

Plus, in the scenario, the C's would be getting a bargain on Smith, who they are buying low on.

A deal with Sulliger as the centerpiece for a top center in the league who just turned 29 isn't overwhelming. Memphis could do better than that.
