I'm not sure if this has been covered elsewhere... but why not trade Green and Bass for Luol Deng? If the stories are to be believed, he's 100% outta there at the end of the season. It's bad enough there, you wonder if they'll get trigger happy.

Because he wants a ton of money.  Which is why Chicago let him go.

Chicago has a well known allergy to spending money on players who deserve it.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I think there is enough evidence to suggest that MIke Brown is a garbage coach.

If we trade with the cabs I want it to be about dumping salary and getting expirings/picks. I'm not at all interested in any of their young talent.

Wait till off season, make Deng a 4 year 46 million deal, then use it as a sign and trade basis to dump Green, Bass and co on the Cavs.

You'll probably need to offer him a little more than that.  But if you're right and that's in the ballpark, we can sign him for 4 years, $44.3 million just with the Pierce trade exception and some pick to make the Cavs not feel like idiots.

Why wait? By trading for him now, you expand your options far beyond Deng.

Because if we trade for him now and he ends up wanting more money than Ainge wants to pay, the trade will be for nothing.

The Cavs just fired Chris Grant. Wonder if that helps or hurts the idea of trading for Deng?

I think it hurts.  I doubt the new guy will be in panic mode & I can't see them go immediately into more upheaval right away.

but but -- isn't firing your GM mid-season just that -- panic mode?

new GM walks into his office day one... Deng says to him / her "i'm gone in July so you might as well trade me now... GM calls Gilbert and asks what he wants to do... Gilbert says: "get me to the playoffs somehow. trade him if you have to."... no?

Deng wants 14-15 million a year.  He rejected a 3 yr, 30 million dollar extension from Chicago.  That says to me, you need a lot more money than what you are throwing around, at least 12 million a year if not 13 or 14.

Trading for Deng: hurts.

Trading for Dion Waiters: helps. I bet he's gone by the deadline.

So see how it goes. If you can sign him to a solid contract -- great. If not, you could S&T him in a variety of ways, or let him walk and have ample cap space and tons of picks to deal for anyone available (via trade or FA) to pair with Rondo, Sully, etc.

To me, any of these is more attractive than keeping #UncleSnoozeButton and Bass at this stage in our rebuild.

Sure, firing your GM mid-season is panic mode.

My point is that do you continue to exascerbate things by coming in & immediately move Deng if you're the new GM?  I'm not sure they do.
