Baxter Holmes: Rajon Rondo said he's "intrigued" by free agency in summer of 2015: "It’s something I haven’t experienced and may want to go through." He compared it to "college recruiting".

Rajon Rondo's initial reaction today was to start laughing and say, "Already? That’s crazy what you guys come up with.," when asked about an ESPN report that he will test free agency in the summer of 2015.

Not surprised by this but I think it puts Ainge in an interesting position this summer.

If Rondo does not agree to an extension this summer and wants to "test the waters", I think Ainge would be wise to move him.

Just saw that. Find it a little odd that he says that a day or two after saying he doesn't like change and would like to stay with the Celtics...

Why wouldn't he be intrigued by it.

Carmelo said exactly the same thing earlier this year.

I wonder how different the responses will be from CB'ers between the two players.

He also said to Baxter "even if I was 110% we would lose this year" he obviously know our roster outside of sully,  is crap.

We definitely need to add major talent thiis summer if we plan on keeping rondo

He has zero trade value right now ,so if he gets traded it will be on draft night or later

Its his big chance to leverage control of his career, whether that's with the C's or elsewhere.

want to see what I can get is different from I WANT TO LEAVE

He probably really does hate change, but he just wants to test the waters just to see how much he can actually get, but wants to use that to have Ainge give him a bigger contract

He'd be a financial idiot to accept an extension this summer

Any wise human being will be intrigued by free agency. Rondo is a wise human being, so therefore he will be intrigued by free agency.

Transitive property yay.

Depends entirely on how he views the FA market at the end of next year and his own recovery.

If he has another injury ala Derek Rose how much would he be worth? Its about risk tolerance and how much he expects to get offered.

Yeah, like I said in the OP, I'm certainly not surprised with this quote.

I guess I'll ask a follow up question, how comfortable are you guys with Rondo going into next year without an extension and hitting unrestricted free agency in 2015?

I'm guessing he got a call from his agent.

That said, both this and his previous remarks are completely within the bounds of what players say all the time in normal (and successful) negotiations.

"Rondo and the Celtics discussed a possible extension of his current deal recently, but those talks were largely perfunctory. Negotiations will heat up this summer when the Celtics will look to tack three years onto the final year of Rondo's current contract, offering him a quality raise and locking him in at a moderate salary that would allow the team to add quality pieces around him.

If Rondo reaches free agency after the 2014-15 season, he'll be able to command a much larger salary and drive up his price tag on the open market.

While the Celtics have remained steadfast that they have no current plans to trade Rondo, they might have to ponder that scenario a bit more if they are unable to work out an extension this summer, or risk leaving themselves a bit exposed if he reaches free agency after next season."

If Cs don't get him signed this summer, he's gone IMO.  I don't see DA signing him to a max contract in free agency.

It entirely depends on what I see from him for the remainder of this season. Sure, I understand there's a possibility that he might not be back to his old self until next season. But there should at least be some progress. And then there's also the possibility that he'll never be the same. So my answer is, I don't know. Not a very informative answer but I feel like his value is a mystery to the entire league.

We shall wait and see.
