I think this flew under the radar with the festivities for KG and PP this weekend.

http://rockets.clutchfans.net/6068/daryl-morey-omer-asik-rockets/

Morey (from Houston) to season ticket holders: “At this point, Omer is very likely going to be here until the end of his contract at the end of next season, not this season. The window to trade him was [in December], and teams weren’t aggressive enough to get him, so we’re excited about him being a part of our future.”

Well it looks like we can close this chapter

No way.  The above is pretty classic GM-speak.  It means nothing, one way or the other.

I take this to mean that Morey still wants to move Asik, but his December deadline backfired, and he's still getting lowballed by every GM.

Yup he's trying to reestablish some level of leverage and also prep his fanbase that a deal might not happen.

Yeah, they have 0 interest in paying Omer $15 million next year to be a disgruntled backup and insurance policy, then letting him go for nothing.

This is purely Morey trying to raise the price and covering his butt if things fall through.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
Asik is definitely going to be moved.

Any good GM will say, "I'm not going to trade this guy anymore!"

I don't think Daryl Morey would want to pay 15 million for a Center that isn't going to play, and deserves to be playing starting minutes.

total BS,

Morey ran himself into a corner with the Dec deadline. Now he is trying "take him off the table" to try to improve his negotiating position. The big problem is so few teams can afford to take on Asik at 15mill next season.

But the cap hit is only 8ish million because they have only been paying him 5 million the last two years.  For Houston it isn't that big a deal, the problem they are having is the acquiring team didn't get the benefit of the two years of under paying and thus would actually be paying the full 15 million for one year (even with just the 8 million cap hit).  Thus, for a team to acquire Asik they need to have some sort of financial incentive and in that there just isn't a market.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

As the real deadline and teams need Asik to make that push, his value should go back up.

A smart GM would probably not wait and throw in a carrot now to try and steal Asik before other start really bidding.

Morey screwed himself w/ the December deadline. He got lowballed then (arguably), and there's nothing that should make Asik's value increase (other than teams getting antsy), since he's basically not playing, and he doesn't exactly have a long track record (that's not to say I don't think he's good, but teams might be hesitant to pony up for a guy who has only been a full-time starter for one season).

Maybe, but I think he would want even less to make a bad deal.

The disconnect there is that it's not Morey paying him - he just has to worry about his cap number.  But ownership would be cutting those checks and it's unlikely they'd be too happy about it, especially if Lin's still there and getting his $15 million too.

Houston doesn't have Knick/Laker/Net money, and that's going to lead to pressure on Morey, especially since the Rockets still seem like they're a piece or two away from legit contention.
