Perkins was making 4.5 million and got 10 million.   Danny knew Perkins was overrated and wasn't worth that much.  In fact, Perkins might be the most overpaid least valuable player in league now.   Perkins was also in contract year so he had little to lose.   Big men never get paid as little as his extension in free agency.

Rondo would get 15 million in extension.   After he undoubtedly puts up poor stats this year, an extension at 15 million is not a slap in the face at all.  How many teams will have cap space to offer him 18-20 million?  Is it worth the risk of playing out his contract - a year and a half left - for 9 additional million plus one extra year at 20 million, when you could get hurt and end up with MLE offers?

I suspect that Danny offered extension now and Rondo suggested doing in off season when he can get an extra year.   Given the way Rondo is playing right now he is still far from 100%.   I think he jumps at that offer in July.

Speaking of smoke signals from Danny, there's quite a bit in this article from Bulpett:

http://bostonherald.com/sports/celtics_nba/boston_celtics/2014/01/danny_ainge_thinks_only_of_cs_future

Says to me that Bass's bags are already packed.

Great post. There were a few comments that really stood out for me.

"And whether those drafted players are Al Jefferson, who you love, and Delonte West, who we developed and loved, and then move them for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen — or whether those draft picks turn into Rajon Rondo or Paul Pierce and they’re with you forever."
Sounds like he is really banking on keeping Rondo in green.

"I think everybody would think he’s not part of our long-term plans, but as well as he’s played and the character he has and the work ethic might play him into consideration for us down the road."
Speaking about Humphries.

I think that "down the road" could be a trade to a contender next month--and then a resigning with the C's over the summer.

Yeah, he really surprised me this year. I always thought of him as a soft, overpayed celebrity.

But maybe I was just biased because I don't like the nets. I'm really pulling for him to stay in Boston, I'm impressed with his playing and hussle this year.

Danny's quote, "I don’t do deals just for the sake of change,” said Ainge. “We change for the purpose of progress."

is an automatic classic.

Meh. It's not even in the same building as "because there ain't no fours"

I don't remember Danny letting other GM's determining his players value on the open market.

This is a good point.  In general Danny has not resigned free agents once they tested the market.  Posey, Tony and Ray Allen.  Danny has fallen short of offering what they demand once it gets to that point.

He resigned PP/KG pretty aggressively though, same with Jeff Green.

The key is "test the market" rather than hit free agency. If Danny really wants you he doesn't let you get out the door very far.

"I think that Rondo will demand quite a bit in the open market. The competition for Rondo in free agency will be very high."

That sounds like an agent talking up his client not a GM about a player he needs to sign.

If your gonna try and keep him the media black-out that was in effect from Rondo's side would be the wisest. Rondo just asked why would he wanna leave and left it at that. Why mention an offer was made and rejected? Then say he's gonna be expensive and a lot of folks are gonna want him? Sounds like your talking yourself right out of the picture  or preparing folks for the obvious or talking him up for other people.

" I am a big D.A. fan and a bigger R.R. fan but he just shared shared pillow talk on the radio in a way that cannot be endearing to Rajon or his agent. Danny isn't stupid. He's not a robot either but he likes to think he's pretty smart and it seems like he just sent a message but the person supposed to get that message appears to be everybody else first and Rajon 2nd. A lot of folks have a real blindspot when it comes to putting themselves in other peoples shoes. If you were Rajon and woke up to hear that what would you think? I wonder what Rajon's old friend Perk thought? Think he picked up the phone and gave his old friend a call and some advice?? "

yeah - Danny thinks he is brilliant and soooooo much smarter and more business savvy than that old soft-hearted Red was.

trouble is, Danny ain't that smart - he's made a couple of very good late first-round draft picks and had the two trades one summer that rebuilt the team. well basically, he was lucky to have gotten KG in one of his trades and KG rebuilt the team and the franchise and the Celtic pedigree by getting the culture back to where it is supposed to be. Danny has made a whole bunch of moves that either hurt the team or resulted in treading water.

Danny worst trait is his blind spot to the players as people - yeah, it's a business, but that's not all it is. a team sport, and even more so, the Boston Celtics, is about team morale and togetherness. Ainge constantly alienates his guys by shopping them around the league. then he acts stunned when Ray Allen bolts for the enemy and signs for less money out of spite.

until Danny changes the way he treats his players, the Celts franchise is going to continue to grow the reputation as a place to rent and not buy. very sad for the one franchise that was always the opposite under Red's leadership.

Also, with Perkins turning down the Celtics offer (the highest they were going to make), it shouldn't have come as a surprise when he was traded.  Danny has a salary ceiling for all his players...if they think it should be higher, then naturally, he's going to get the best return possible for them before they leave.

Now, if Rondo turns down ANOTHER extension...then, I may start getting nervous about his future in Celtic green.

I guess he learned it when he was dealt to the Blazers...
