I'm in Japan so I heard that interview at about 1am and I was kinda stunned by the typical "we have had discussions" GM talk being turned into an offer was made but smartly declined. Because it's not in Rondo's interest to negotiate now.

The C.B.A is going to make building a championship team more likely if 2 or 3 stars are willing to make sacrifices for a bigger goal. The Current 2 time champs did just that. Lebron is maybe off to elsewhere and he's gonna get his max. He got his rings and money and now he'll get his max.

I think Danny just alerted other GM's that in time Rondo will in fact be available. Danny must hope he rebuilds his skill set and then some and Danny can get a best deal available for him before losing him in FA. Rondo being back in the lineup during a "tank" year in January makes more sense if you go this way. Danny is a business man with the Celtics being his employer. I am a big D.A. fan and a bigger R.R. fan but he just shared shared pillow talk on the radio in a way that cannot be endearing to Rajon or his agent. Danny isn't stupid. He's not a robot either but he likes to think he's pretty smart and it seems like he just sent a message but the person supposed to get that message appears to be everybody else first and Rajon 2nd.

A lot of folks have a real blindspot when it comes to putting themselves in other peoples shoes. If you were Rajon and woke up to hear that what would you think?

I wonder what Rajon's old friend Perk thought? Think he picked up the phone and gave his old friend a call and some advice??

Ainge said the Celtics had offered Perkins all they could under the current collective bargaining agreement.

“[Perkins] wasn’t really interested in doing a contract extension, which I understand,” Ainge told WEEI. “He wanted to test the market. Last time he didn’t test the market and this time he really wanted to test the market and see what his value was.

“That was a concern but it wasn’t so much of a concern that we would have done something just for that purpose. But the fact that we were able to, in our opinion, help our team this year and protect ourselves for the future was very good for us."

I don't see why Rondo or his Agent would be upset by what he said.

I think Danny will offer him the extension again this summer (at which point they can give him 3 years, rather than the 2 he can offer right now), but then I think the Perk comparisons are right on.  If Rondo turns down the extension this summer, then I think Danny will look hard at trading Rondo before he becomes a free agent.

But I am not sure why Rondo or his agent would have any problem with what Danny said.  Basically he just stated the obvious.

Saying your actively discussing a future deal and vis a vis that player is in your future is a LONG toss from we tried but it didn't work and the guy was smart not too. He will probably attract max money on the open market...

Danny grabbed the narrative for no clear reason. I think the Captain position was a genuine move and the interest in Rondo is as well. When that offer was declined was not made clear but it coulda been 2 days ago for all anyone knows. Everything in context. I don't know the context so I'm guessing. (90% of these threads are about that level unless it's about something that already happened)

I think Danny just accidentally on purpose said too much.

I'm at work so I can't really check, but didn't he basically say (We want Rondo back, but if he were to sign an extension today he would be accepting a contract for less money)

From what I remember, he made it pretty clear that both parties are interested but why would he accept an offer when he could get more for the same contract in the offseason.

I thought D.A. had said something almost identical after a trade that was tough to swallow was made. In reality Perk coulda just left and Danny MIGHT have another ring but no assets. I just think he's doing his job. Rondo has been very quiet about Ray,Doc the P.P/K.G. trade etc and has handles himself very very well. Danny has to talk though since he runs a team. I don't think he talks without considering his words. Saying Rajon rejected an offer has meaning. Forget the details as most fans do not have much understanding of the C.B.A and will just hear the easily digestible part. Not the why but the what.

Your correct. Or I recall it the same way. Intentions are nice but a lot can happen between now and then. I'm just not sure why a guy who keeps a lot close to the vest chose to say this?  This is about the Celtics and Rondo not Rondo and the Celtics. It seems thatDanny felt he needed to say that. I can imagine why if intentions are met with unforseen obstacles. I just feel like we've been warned.

Maybe it's just me thinking too much...I hope so;D

Danny just said, we offered him an extension, we weren't surprised he said no due to CBA. He's a star, he's paid like a star, and we'll keep talking.

Basically he reinforced that the C's want him and that he's star who should be highly paid more than what the C's can extend him for (which is a lot of money already)

What part of that would upset Rondo or his camp?

I'm firmly against just trading Rondo now, but I would have to change my mind if Rondo turned down an extension this summer and said he was testing the waters.

Last thing I want is going into next season with the whole "Rondo Decision" looming like Minnesota is dealing with Kevin Love and New York is dealing with Carmelo.

I heard that Danny Ainge sent Rondo a mix CD with a lot of Usher songs because Rondo likes Usher but when Rondo texted Danny back he only said, "Great CD, THX"

So now Danny doesn't know if Rondo will or won't sign an extension at ALL or if he's in the friend zone or what!

Of all the Celtics memorabilia I own, none of them would compare to an Usher mix CD made by Danny Ainge.

TP. That was hilarious.

That's incorrect--it was actually a Frank Ocean test pressing. Or a Boyz 2 Men cassette. We really don't know. Sources can confirm, however, that it was not Usher.

Tracklist:

1.) What's the deal?
2.) Please don't leave
3.) Can you stand the rain?
4.) Thank you in advance

He will get the complete CD once he's accepted the extension.

I don't remember Danny letting other GM's determining his players value on the open market. He seems to renegotiate or trade. I'm just a fan so I might be wrong. It seems that 2 of 10 teams with the top payrolls actually have a shot at the title. OKC is at #13 Houston #25 and S.A. at #18. Being a MAX player is a compliment and all but it implies a kind of treacherous route. Can't just sign a buncha MAX players like N.Y. so that means that some flexibility on both sides with the team goal as the unifying point is the new UBUNTU.
I'm just giving opinions I.P.
The interview just struck me as odd and then the shutdown and "oh I've said too much" ....just seemed odd. Folks posting bizarre undo able trades a lot...I figured an opinion post wouldn't be any harm :)
