I just wanted to take a moment and say...Thank you Danny for not pulling the trigger on Josh Smith. I saw this article recently posted on CB and it just reinforced everything I think about Josh Smith. What a dodged bullet. A $14M bullet. Whew! For those of you not following Smith this season here are his #s:

15pts, 7rebs, 3assts on 41% shooting and 24% from 3pt. Oh here is the icing. 58% at the line.

Now that I've sufficiently bashed Smith here is the icy reality. We have a player with remarkably similar #s on our team named Jeff Green.
Comparison
While Green's percentages are better in every category the efficiency and splits show a remarkably similar in-game impact. Their PER stats bear this out as Jeff is ranked 21st right below Smith at 20th among SFs.

But here's the bright side. We pay Jeff $5M/yr less to give us pedestrian numbers and he's signed for 1 fewer years, 2 fewer if he declines the player option.

So here's the question I'm posing. Given their numbers this season and their corresponding salaries, who would you guys rather have, Smith or Green?

Your screenname "nostar" seems particularly apt for this post.

I don't think the Celtics were ever seriously targeting Smith, do you? He's not really a SF which was the main mistake the Pistons made, but maybe they figure they are losing or dealing Monroe this season anyway.

Smith is more like an athletic, slightly undersized PF. He doesn't have the shot to survive at the 3, Green does. However, Smith is a better rebounder and shot blocker.

Anyway, kind of a weird comparison to make to try and buttress Green.

I'd rather have Green than Smith, but that's not saying much considering I'd rather have Royal Ivey than Smith.

Is this a joke?  Josh Smith every single time.

Well I don't sport hate Green and I do Smith. So I'll take Green until I can trade him.

I'd rather have the guy who doesn't shoot enough than the guy who shoots you out of games.  At least when Green stays in the background other guys take the extra shots.  When Smith takes bad shots the other team usually gets the ball.

Smith is on pace to have the lowest 3point percentage of any player who has ever taken at least 300 3pointers in a season...pretty pathetic.  The man he may overtake is Antoine Walker.  Walker also has the 3rd worst percentage in another season.

When Smith stays near the basket and plays with effort on defense he is awesome.  I realize there isn't much room near the rim on his current team, but it's been a career problem.  Both players seem to have a personality defect that limits their effectiveness and I would choose Green's personality defect over Smith's.

Josh Smith is not a SF. Putting Josh Smith on a team with 4 or so other PFs seems counterproductive.

If Smith made $9 million, I would prefer him. He is more of a game-changer, he rebounds, and he has good chemistry with Rondo.

He's not worth his contract, though.

Smith by far, the only thing Green does better than Smith is shoot 3's. Smith is a better rebounder, passer, defender, and has a much better handle.

Are we getting Josh Smith the SF or Josh Smith the PF?  Big difference there.  Smith is a much better PF than Green is SF.

He is overpaid regardless though.  So is Green, but it's on a much smaller scale.

Even though I would not want him anywhere near the Celtics, we have to acknowledge that he's playing out of position and playing with the requisite control needed for a player like him to succeed. In Atlanta he was taught to play in the post, where he is extremely effective but instead, Dumars is putting him a position to fail.

Yeah this is 100% correct. He's playing SF because of Monroe/Drummond and it's killing him. I think they'll put up with it and then put Smith in at PF next to Drummond when Monroe is gone.
He needs to erase jumpshots from his game and shoot only in the key. As his career as progressed, he went from a good FG% to poor, the further out he started drifting from the basket.

He'll be much more effective when Monroe is gone, similarly I think Green becomes better now that Rondo is back.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Here's a crazy idea, would you trade Wallace and Green for Smith/filler?

I think Smith is a better player than green strictly on ability but Smith's contract makes him less valuable than Green.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19
