http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2014-01-19/pacers-david-west-fined-for-elbowing-blake-griffin?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl1|sec3_lnk3%26pLid%3D432318

Remarkable.  This was called a Flagrant 2 and West was ejected:-)))))  Man, I love me some David West and think our franchise was set back quite a bit when he chose the Pacers OVER us!!!

Remember when a flagrant 2 was really a HARD foul???

How many of you remember the 1980's Lakers/Celtics battles in the finals and the McHale/Worthy fouls??  I bet those guys are laughing their butts off over crap like this:-))

David West did what PFs/Cs have done for 80 years, and are taught to do since elementary school.  When you get a rebound and someone is up your behind with the fullcourt press trying to reach in and strip the ball the moment you grab it, you squeeze the ball and swing/flail your arms back and forth.  Players are more likely to get back on defense and let you outlet in peace if you threaten their jaw with an elbow.

An elbow after the play should be a technical, not an ejection, 2FTs, and the ball.  It wasn't done to injure (as many elbows are) it was done to teach.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

No, David West did what all PFs/Cs have been instructed to do: take cheap shots at Griffin, because he's supposedly easy to rattle. It's been happening with discerning regularity all season.

This was an easy flagrant -- elbow in the head of a defenseless player while being exactly aware what you're doing, and not making a play for the ball. It may get downgraded, but I have no problem with this officiating crew sending a message that bush-league strategy is, well, bush-league.

Oh, and cue in obligatory grandpa comments. I expect to watch actual basketball skill when I tune in to the NBA. If I want poorly rendered MMA, I can switch to hockey, thankyouverymuch.

Koz has it right. Not that I have any problem with what West did, really, but there's no way that's not going to be an ejection. That's why he walked into DeAndre on his way to the bench as soon as he did it--he knew he was gone.

Agreed.  Kind of hard for me to get too riled up over a guy being punished for deliberately elbowing another player in the head.  Save that stuff for crappier sports.

Did you all watch the video??  That was NOT even an elbow to the head as much as it was a forearm rub to the back of Griffin's head and neck area.  Even the announcer said it was NOT vicious.

I was seen worse contact made in a tennis doubles match.

Please.

That's not really the point though--a soft elbow to the head is still an elbow to the head, which still makes it a flagrant 2.

But yeah, it is interesting how much more often you see players getting up into Blake Griffin's face this year.

The kind of "rub" where Griffin's head ends up parallel to the floor? I suggest concentrating on the replay that starts at 0:27.

edit: I guess that using your logic, Wade made a really tough, old-school play when he dislocated Rondo's elbow?

To compare what Wade did to Rondo to this astonishes me completely!!  West's arm was up above his head and was touching Blake's head and then he sort of followed thru battling for the rebound.  There was ABSOLUTELY NO wind up because he had NO room for a wind up.  On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst, JR Smith's elbow in last year's playoffs was about an 8 or 9.  This was about a 2.

Do you really believe this warranted a Flagrant 2 and ejection?  I do realize that a Flagrant 2 brings an ejection.

This, even under today's soft called NBA, was a Flagrant 1.  I will be astonished if this is not reduced to a Flagrant 1.

Koz, I bet you really hated the battles between the Lakers and Celtics in the 1980s and the Pistons' teams in the 1990s and the Knicks' teams, etc.  Did you even watch back then?:-))

Full swing with an elbow (seen from the camera under the basket), follow-through with a forearm (seen from the opposite angle), both unnecessary and excessive. This is not a basketball play, and I have zero issues with the way it was treated.

I do realize what it brings, and yes, if you elbow a player in the head you should absolutely be heading for the showers. Especially given the context of the situation.

You can bet whatever you want. I care about actual basketball skills, not the extracurriculars. You know, stuff like this:

Am I supposed to be emotionally attached to the McHale clothesline to be a true fan, or something?

No, you just probably missed out on some amazing basketball in the 1980s and arguably some of the best team basketball and role players with the Pistons of the 1990s (as much as I hated them then, I can now look back objectively and see the sacrifice that those teammates made to win multiple championships).  I hope you were able to enjoy those series Koz.

Good basketball is good basketball, though. No one would have any admiration, even grudging, for the Pistons if they weren't a great team.

It boggles my mind that the same posters who decry the "thug" mentality of some NBA players are the same ones who want there to be a more physical game out on the court.
