Rondo on Heat: Don't have a rivalry, but I still don't like those guys

“It’s not a rivalry,” Rondo said Monday after practice at AmericanAirlines Arena, “but I still don’t like those guys.”

Another reporter asked a question, trying to move on, and Rondo answered it. But then he went back to the previous query about Miami.

“To go back and answer your question, I don’t really like anybody I play against,” he said. “That’s just the type of attitude I approach the game with. It’s a business. It’s a game. We’re not friends on the court. Afterwards it’s a different story, but while we’re playing I’m trying to win.”

Recently traded from Miami to Boston, Joel Anthony has called wanting Rondo to win “weird at first,” saying the point guard is the type of player you hate to play against but love when he’s on your team. Anthony said he could instantly spot Rondo’s leadership, and that the point guard welcomed him from Day One.

He wasn’t so welcoming when Anthony wore his Heat jersey.

“A lot of things upset me about Miami,” Rondo said. “Let me go home and write (them all) down. Nah, just we’ve had some great battles in the past. When you play a team – I could say the same thing about the Knicks or the teams we’ve battled in the past, the Game 7 series – it’s a grind. You’re competing. It’s a competition. There’s just some teams you don’t like.”

Yup. 95% of any rivalry is for, and by, and sustained by fans.

Which doesn't diminish the rivalry at all, of course.

The guy really hates Miami.  Generally, he's not the buddy buddy type guy, even off the court but his dislike for Miami is extra special and I think it stemmed from the back and forth battle between the two teams, his scuffle with D Wade and dislocated elbow, and Ray Allen leaving for the team. 

Too bad he's going to play them when he's still trying to round into form.

And all these comments are why I love Rondo.

And it is this attitude of Rondo's - this "I don't care what you think, I'm here to win, one way or another," - that is missing from Jeff Green. It is the reason Green will always be a very skilled, athletic player who will never lead his team to a title. And it is the reason Danny screwed up so badly by acquiring Green - his competitive persona never has fit the Celtics, especially the KG-led hard core group that he was asked to help win a title.

Danny's glaring weakness - he doesn't understand people and how important it is to have a team persona that is shared and that fits together. Red, of course, understood all this - in spades.
