Obviously, Danny Ainge won't give up everything for Melo, but say if the Knicks realize that there is no way Melo is coming back after the season and that they might as well just get something in return and Danny somehow gets Melo for cheap, hoping that Melo and Rondo would attract a third star to form an effective super-team?



The -11 wins part in the image above may not tell the whole story. Trading a huge contract for such a large cap relief (players we trade would be free agents after this season) would only help them, perhaps if they want to chase a superstar in the 2014 summer.

Obviously such a trade depends on the Knicks' decision of whether they want to get something in return for Carmelo if he leaves.

Is it 2007 all over again? Do we shop for another superstar and hope that we can get that third star (kevin love? maybe with all the assets we have) since Melo and Rondo are already here?

Now, before everyone just starts saying that Melo will ball-hog and all, let's assume a better coach and a better team environment will help him. Add Rondo to that, who will get ticked off at Melo if Melo doesn't follow the game plan, maybe he will improve.

I think he just needs a better coach, a better franchise and just a better environment.

I wouldn't be happy. I really don't think giving him a massive contract is going to work out for whatever franchise does it.

Well, he has 2 years left. Didn't KG have a huge contract when he came to Boston and took a little pay cut when signed an extension for the Celtics? Assuming such a team wins, I think Anthony would be willing to sacrifice a little.

I really don't think he is that type of player, at this age, who would put more money over winning and playing for that trophy.

Carmelo Anthony has a ETO that he has pretty much guaranteed he will exercise, so any trade for him would be a rental for the purpose of convincing him that he should stay in Boston.

Additionally, I am not convinced that Carmelo Anthony would sacrifice money for the sake of winning.  I also have concerns that he is the sort of player who will be reluctant to trust a coach like Brad Stevens until the Celtics win anything.

Just about every word of this post is absolutely ludicrous.  The idea that the "likelihood of [a Melo to the Celtics trade] happening increases day-by-day" is pure speculation.  There is no indication that the Knicks are prepared to trade Melo nor that the Celtics would be interested.  Furthermore, if the Knicks were to trade Melo, the Celtics seem like the last place they'd want to send him.

Additionally, the posted trade is another classic Celtics blog fanboy fantasy.  The reason you give for the Knicks to take this deal (salary cap relief) isn't even true.  The Knicks would receive more cap relief by letting Melo walk than taking this trade.

KG was past his prime and KG has always been a team guy. Anthony appears far more self-centered.

I also don't buy that Anthony would leave money on the table to go to a considerably smaller market, which would hurt his endorsement revenue. He also isn't coming to a surefire top team. Lebron and Bosh had a surefire top team when they joined with Wade. Melo and Rondo? Of those 4 players, the top 2 are in Miami (though Wade is in decline).

I would love to see Melo a Celtics, but at the same time I wouldn't want to give up much in terms of players or the 2014 Celtics pick. Gutting the team to add Melo keeps us out of contention. Giving up the 2014 pick unprotected in this draft for a flawed player who the Knick pretty much have to move seems like a decision we might regret. I'd offer NY matching salaries the Brooklyn picks and a few Celtics picks and hope they bite which I doubt. I wouldn't give the 2014 pick without top 5 protection.
