The NBA is a league of superstars.  The only real point in accumulating assets is in either in the hopes of trading those assets for a superstar or in the hopes that one of those assets will become a superstar (picks/youngsters).

That said, I'd be very hesitant to deal Rondo, particularly at a time when teams may question his health.  He provides the Celtics some sort of respectability not only for recruiting other players, but for also appeasing the fan base.

Furthermore, while we can debate just how good Rondo is, he has shown at times that he can be an elite player who can absolutely dominate a game.  In a league where it's absolutely essential to have a player like this (preferably 2 or 3), I'd be very hesitant to deal a player like that away, particularly if we're not getting a similar caliber player in return.

And quite frankly, I don't see many teams looking to give us a similar player in return.

All good points.  I agree that no team is going to trade us a current superstar for Rondo, especially not one that is younger than him.

That's why in return for Rondo I'd want to get a package including multiple assets that I felt had a decent chance of turning into that sort of player.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

The problem is that, while you're right about what would be a fair return, you'd be hard pressed to find other teams willing to give up multiple assets that had a decent chance of being players that can dominate in the playoffs. There's been a good amount of young(ish) star players traded over the last 5 years. Start with Paul/Melo/DH/Deron/Harden and whoever I missed.

All of those players were traded because they had to be traded, due to either budget constraints, because the player threatened to leave or maybe because the player was a malcontent. None of those teams had players at that level and age that were happy and the team could afford to pay and just decided to move them for multiple assets. They're too hard to come by.

With MCW and his size, he moves to SG and Rondo to the point.

But what's really the chances of that happening?  So we're going to trade Rondo for a nice package of parts that is then going to allow us to trade for a better superstar down the road?

Sure, it's possible.  But I think there's better odds that Rondo regains his form and proves to be that superstar we were looking for in the first place.

...Ok fine, top 7 pick, I'd still do it in this draft class.

The odds of the player you pick at 7 having more success in his career than Rondo's already had aren't that great.

Tim, I asked you in another thread but can't remember which thread.
Would you trade Rondo for Wiggins, Parker or Embid? Hypothetically?
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."
