Most of it is pretty predictable: Wallace is the least valuable asset. Rondo third most valuable due to his injury possibly robbing him of speed and also the natural decline of athleticism as he ages. Sullinger 2nd as a good player on a rookie deal. Finally, their collection of draft picks are most valuable, according to Pelton.

What was most depressing was his dim appraisal of Green and Bass:

Quote
Value in the eyes of the beholder: Brandon Bass, Jeff Green

Statistically, both Bass and Green are wildly overpaid. Green will make $22.9 million through 2015-16 while providing an estimated $12.1 million in production, and Bass is projected to drop below replacement level next season, when he's scheduled to make $6.9 million. Still, the Celtics might be able to sell the right team that Green can play like he did during the second half of last season or that Bass' solid defense and midrange shooting make him a good fit off the bench for a contender.

I stumbled upon that same assessment, which is a bit absurd.

accurate assessment.  You would be lucky to get an expiring contract for Bass.   It would be tough to get an asset for Green... a Green for Asik deal would make some sense, I think... since Asik is owed so much money next year.

I wouldn't say they are wildly overpaid, but I think they don't have much value as trade assets even if their contracts are close to appropriate market value.

They are just not the type of players who will entice opposing GMs to overpay, so their value in trades is mainly salary filler.  They are not bad enough for a team to ask for much i the way of extra compensation for taking on their contracts, yet not good enough for most teams to be interested if they already have an adequate incumbent starter already established on their roster.

Do I even want to ask how an estimated monetary in production number is determined?

Pretty much this.

It's a slide rule thing, so people who don't know that much about basketball can sound like experts and get jobs at places like ESPN.

...but that probably didn't answer your question.

Stats guys tend to feel that players whose production consists almost entirely of points have to score with really, really high efficiency to be worth more than mid-level money.

I tend to agree -- Green and Bass are overpaid.  I think using the word "wildly" is a bit of an exaggeration, however.

Who is Pelton?

He's the Dean at Greendale Community College.

I think Green is overpaid but "wildly" seems like an exaggeration. I guess it depends on what you are comparing him to. Yes, there are guys making the mid-level who could also score 17 ppg if you started him 35 minutes - jeez, I didn't realize he had dropped to 15.7 ppg. OK, nevermind. This guy is wildly overpaid.

His 0.5 steals and 1.5 assists are particularly [dang]ing.

Yeah.  For me, with Green, it's not so much about the points.  It's that he does so little else.  If you're gonna pay a guy that much to just be a scorer, he better be a really productive one.

The main thing that separates Jeff Green from somebody like, say, Nick Young, is that he plays solid defense.

On the eye test, there isn't a SF in the league making the mid-level scoring 17 points per game. If someone making about that is scoring that much it's because they're still on their rookie scale deal.

9 million a year for Green's production, years in the league, and age is a bargain.

I have a hard time calling greens deal a bargain, hes an average nba starter with a bad motor.
