He had that break out game a week or so ago, and since has returned to a disappointing stat line. Have not been able to catch any of those games, and would like to get your thoughts as to why he seems kind of stuck on the low numbers, including minutes played.  Thanks.

Watching him he seems to be a player who makes the right decisions and has a lot of useful skills but is a half second slow on basically everything. I think next season we will see a huge jump in production as he gets stronger and used to the speed of the NBA.

I agree the summer league was the speed he is currently at as a player. Hopefully next season he makes that jump. I personally think he will.

I feel like it's partly speed but mostly confidence/assertiveness.  It seems like every potential rebound opportunity he's like "Ok, I'm just gonna stand here a little ways away from the rim, maybe the ball will land over he...oh, you wanna get in front of me?  That's cool."

I'm optimistic on his skill level, especially now that the 3s are dropping, but he's gotta learn how to bang with NBA bigs if he ever wants to be more than a 4th big.

I heard Stevens won't let him play until he finishes growing a beard.

So odds are he's finished as an NBA player.

I agree with jr_ . Olynyk is slow. I think this will change over the next few seasons, but, he has not yet become "natural" with his decisions/movements. He has been called for a boat load of traveling calls as, upon receiving a pass on the perimeter, he takes a "college step" before passing away or shooting. Just a rookie thing that hurts his play.

Another point. In summer league he demonstrated classic shooting form and FG%. I always joked that his form was so perfect he looked like that statue on the top of one of those AAU trophies. This year he has abandoned his shooting form the majority of the time and it has cost his outside shot. He has had a few games where he has "got it going", but, our team has not been able to effectively leverage it. Victim of the 10 man rotation.

Olynyk is a superb passer and has been more about "communicating the ball" this year than shooting. His open shot refusals have hurt the team and his game. I'm sure this will improve.

Olynyk suffers on defense against competent bigs (who doesn't?). Kelly Olynyk does not "play big" as his reach is limited and he's a rookie. I always saw him as a "really big winger" as he is not physically designed to succeed underneath.

I sincerely believe Kelly Olynyk is best coming off the bench as an "outside gunner". I'm not sure exactly what that is....but it sounds really cool.

I'd like to see Kelly do the KevinLove off season workout.  (not comparing them)
I think with a more muscular physique, and more speed he can be a very good big off the bench.  I think a lot of this season is confidence for him.  Love his passing game but he is hesitating on his own offensive game.  Seems to rebound, set screens and do all the little things very nicely.  I don't think he is a starter down the road but a bill walton like sub who can give you minutes and help in every factor of the game.

I really don't think it's fair to judge olynyk this yr. he's in desperate need of gaining muscle weight like a lot of 1st yr. players. particularly a 1st yr pf.

I think he has shown that he makes a lot of the right decisions. but a lot of times making the play actually happen he's a step behind because like a lot of 1st yr players they have to adjust to the speed of the NBA. he's thinking, not reacting.

all of these things are correctable.

so, so far he's a typical rookie imo. doesn't mean anything to me just yet.

Most 1st year rookies lack

1) nba body
2) confidence
3) understand plays/min turnover

Olynyk has number 3 down for the most part. Usually takes rookies until 2nd year to figure this out. Olynyk has to now concentrate on his body which in turn helps him execute plays , and increase his confidence. Olynyk SL version will be a good player in league

Need to get rid of Bass or Hump if we want to guarantee playing time for Kelly.  Both those guys are quite a bit ahead of him defensively and more capable (if less talented) offensively.

I would love to see him get a steady 25-30mpg once Rondo gets back.  The game gets much simpler for big men with a real PG, and Kelly badly needs to keep thing simple.  He's trying to be a jack of all trades out there when he should be building his NBA game skill by skill.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson

I agree.  Add in the ability to play defense...Some are defensive specialists but it seems like most young bigs are slow to pick up the d.

You two are adorable. He needs to stop sucking at basketball before he worries about his hair.
