Works in the NBA trade machine:
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=mfga7th

1.  Why the Pistons do it -- What they acquire in this trade are shooters and scorers.  Getting rid of Monroe also allows them to play Drummond and Josh Smith in their natural positions at 5/4 and plug Green into the 3.

Crawford is also an effective scorer and 6th man for them.  No commitment to keep him, and they have Green under contract control for 2.5 more years.  Meanwhile Monroe is about to get VERY expensive and they'd rather move on and get a starting fit for their team.  They can let Crawford walk if they don't want to keep him.

2.  Why the Celtics do it -- Celtics desperately need a real 5 to plug into their lineup.  Monroe + Sully gives them a legit frontcourt.  Plus both big men are good passers for their position.  They can continue to build a lineup that has high basketball IQ and now has the size to defend the rim.  Favarani is not a starting 5, Monroe is.

Meanwhile, Stuckey gives the Celtics a sizeable expiring contract that can either be used in a trade, or just for the cap savings to sign a free agent in the future.  If Monroe fits like a glove we extend him.  A 'max' contract for him will only be in the 12m range, which is reasonable for a big man of his talent level.

C's would have a hole at SF, which they would use to give Wallace more minutes and maybe showcase him for a later trade.  Meanwhile the upcoming draft is RICH in uber talented small forwards such as Parker and Wiggins.  Also the C's could use Bass in a trade for some SF talent and free up minutes for KO/Sully.

Bottom line -- It's a fair trade.  The trade machine predicts no actual change in win percentage.  But hopefully the reallocation of resources allows both teams to benefit.  The Pistons improve by dropping their players into natural positions by getting a legit 3.  And the Celtics by giving them a legit 5 who will play intelligent ball and help protect the rim a little better.  Although the C's side of the trade, the benefits are more about going forward with a slight step back in the present.

If this is the best case scenario for moving Green I'm for it. Everyone and their mother knew that Piston front court was a terrible fit. I guess the question is whether Detroit could do better. Long term I think they definitely could, but maybe this would be the best short term return(in addition to having Green two more seasons).

I know they weren't exactly expected to contend, but I feel like they've flown under the radar for how badly they've underachieved.

Dumars might go for it with his job on the line. They need to move Smith to PF and get a decent SF that can hit out side shot. Green would fit that bill and have no pressure of having to be the man.

I would think Dumars would ask for a first rounder in this senario

Can Monroe leave after this year?

New CBA ensures we could sign him for more than anyone else can, right?

I would do it.

He's a restricted free agent, so you have to consider what the largest contract is that you are willing to match if Monroe signs an offer sheet with another team.

If you have no problem giving him a contract starting at close to $14m/year, then you need not fear the possibility that he turns into a half-season rental that you lose for nothing.  If you get squeamish about anything north of $10m, then you have to start looking around to see how many idiot GMs will have a ton of cap space.

Right.

Teams can offer more than anyone under the unrestricted FAs overall, though, right? That's what I've read when looking up the Dwightmare Redux: Lakers.

This is one of the trades I like. I am usually against trades of Jeff Green but this one I would do because I like Monroe a lot and we need another big guy.

I don't think Detroit would do it tho, Smith and Green seem to me like a lil bit the same kind of players. Like to shoot jumpshots are athletic and don't shoot a high %. If Smith would just focuses on the paint it might work, would be way better for J-Smooth anyway.

Throw in a pick and take out Stuckey (put in Charlie V.) I think, maybe. Stuckey has been having a fantastic year.

I would do it without question. But I'd assume we throw in a pick, like others mentioned, also take on Charlie V instead if Detroit wanted.

Jeff Green and Brandon Bass for Greg Monroe and Charlie "DNP-CD" is a more sensible trade IMO.

I'd give it serious thought. Monroe has flattened out a bit but maybe Stevens could work some wonders with him.

Edit: I posted this idea on Realgm.com so you can check out some responses

Smith is more of a pf and a better rebounder. Also, Drummond (or at least his defender) camps out down low so they're probably better off with perimeter 3s and 4s than more post players.

I don't see Detroit going for it.  I understand the thought behind Green being a better fit for them but I think Detroit could do better than this if trading Monroe.

we'd probably have to throw in a first or do what someone else suggested and take Charlie V instead and/or possibly send out Bass instead of Craw
