While many of us witnessed with great frustration the enigma known as Gerald Green during his 2 seasons as a Celtic, it is nice to see that he seems to have finally settled down to become a productive starter in the NBA. Currently averaging 13.5 a game for the Suns.  He certainly has paid his dues.  I am very happy for him.

More importantly, he's almost shooting 40% from deep.

If he can keep doing that, he'll have a very long NBA career.

Sure. Give him another four years and he too might be a credible nba player. ;)

Ainge knew Green had talent, but that is the trouble with taking very raw players that aren't quite NBA ready.  It often takes them years and multiple teams to live up to the potential, if they ever do.  The reward can be great if they do live up to the potential (remember Green was a mid-teens pick so being a NBA starter with solid efficiency is great value for that draft spot).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I think the Celts would have stuck with Gerald if he was willing to put the work in at that time.  Gerald's hype and fan expectations, mixed with his lack of work ethic and a coach who had a "earn your minutes" philosophy was all a bad mix.

I give him props for becoming a rotation player.  I pretty much wrote him off after he had to go to Russia.

Exactly. I think Gerald could of been a better player honestly if he spent a season or two in college. He just didnt know the game that well. TO his credit he was expected to be a lottery pick so i dont blame him for coming out and getting paid. But from a purely basketball standpoint i think he could of been better off w/ 2 years at Oklahoma St. He just didnt know how to play basketball really.

Fun having him here. It was tuff times but he always brought excitement, never boring.

It's good to see him mature.

I wouldnt exactly say hes having a decent career... decent season sure. Hes scoring well for a guy who is supposed to score on an over performing team. Im happy for him, however, he is still not an efficient role player for, or wouldnt be able to hit many minutes in the rotation on a solid NBA team.

you can say that..  Hes been in the league almost 10 years as an atheltic swingman, which is hard to do.. But when he was here and traded away (I was a fan) I thought he could be a star... Literally one of the best atheltes in the league but just doesnt have the toughness or size to really impact his play..

I guess going to Russia is enough to make anyone get their act together.  ;D

I've definitely been following his comeback, and am happy for him as well. Last year was a big disappointment. He didn't fit in with Indy.

But he did great in his comeback w/ the Nets prior to that and is doing well in Phoenix. Perhaps the environment suits him better? That can account for a lot.

Regardless, his deal is guaranteed this season and next, which will bring his NBA career earnings to almost $16 Mil by the time he's 28/29. That's definitely 'decent'.

If he continues to hone his strengths and lands another deal into his early 30's, I'd say he certainly redeemed himself and had a nice career (even if it may have underwhelmed initial outlandish expectations).

I sincerely believe there are some players who just need the experience of being out of the NBA and forced to play overseas as a way to fix their mental/emotional/maturity problems.

He has stuck around because he is athletic, tall, and can shoot pretty well, non of which has changed since he was on the Celtics.  He has figured out the game a little bit more since his tools have kept him around for so long, but I pretty much agree with Pearljammer.
