It behooves the Celtics to see all of these teams get better.

Although I tried to make salaries match, the crux of the trade is:

(1) Aaron Afflalo to Cleveland to play with Irving in a revamped back-court. They wouldn't go get Deng if they weren't trying to win now. ...I think Cleveland has to give up another draft pick to Orlando in order to make this happen - but that's fine for an Afflalo type player. Maybe they give up Waiters plus a first and a second.

(2). Waiters to the Nuggets to replace Andre Miller, who is on the outs there (and who makes sense as a first guard off the bench) (Second rounder to Orlando).

(3). Andre Miller to the Kings, which is a franchise badly in need of a point guard. Isaiah Thomas is a nice player, but could surely use some help.

(4). Jason Thompson to the Magic makes sense for a team that literally has two guys 6'10" and over. It's not as if the Kings will miss him, considering Landry and Derrick Williams both play his position. Oladipo plays Afflalo's position, and Orlando is clearly tanking, anyway. A young back up big man on a reasonable contract almost always makes sense.

For tankers:

We need for Cleveland to, essentially, take Chicago's playoff seat, since there's almost no question they dump Boozer, and go under at this point.

Any improvement to the Magic, Nuggets, and Kings is a net win for us.

The Kings will clearly try to win (having taken on Rudy Gay, as will the Nuggets). The Magic are tanking regardless, and nothing can save them anyway.

If there is even marginal improvement in Denver, Cleveland and Sacramento, the bottom of the pile will look like (in rough order)

Utah
Milwuakee
Orlando
Philadelphia
Boston

The top six players in the draft are all game changers:

Embiid, Wiggins, Parker, Smart, Randle, Exum.

This deal literally made me say "what the (expletive)"...outloud....during class...in front of my students.

Seriously? The magic trade an all star candidate this year for...Jason Thompson? The Nuggets trade Andre Miller and net two young starting assets?

Alright, so rejigger the draft picks. What about Afflalo for Thompson and Denver's first rounder in 2015, and Cleveland's first in 2014? Two firsts and Jason Thompson? How could they do better than that for Afflalo?
