Not sure where this notion that Bogans is a serviceable role player came from. He is a deep bench player and always has been. He works hard and is a great team guy which is why he has stuck around as long as he has, but he shouldn't be playing for Boston nonetheless any contenders.
He's averaging 22 mpg over his career. That's not deep bench, it's regular rotation, probably 7th or so on a team in minutes.
and hasn't averaged that in any season since 07-08 i.e. 6 seasons ago. At one time he was a rotation player, now he is most certainly has not. He is a 9th/10th man at best at this point (which where he was last year on Brooklyn). He works hard, is a great teammate, and is an average to maybe slightly above average defender, but he doesn't do anything else at even an average level (and for a SG is a horrid outside shooter for his career and isn't much better than horrid the last couple of years).
Yes, for the last year or two he's been playing sparsely. That doesn't really translate to being a deep bench player for his entire career.
I was a bit harsh in that regard, but early in his career he was playing on a lot of bad teams and getting minutes and regular burn because of it. On Chicago, San Antonio, and Brooklyn, while getting some starts, really was a deep bench player in terms of minutes and certainly in terms of his role. He really only was a regular rotation type player on a good team for his second stint in Orlando. I just don't see him as anything more than a deep bench player for his career, which is one of the reason he has been on so many teams. Regular rotation players don't bounce around on near minimum contracts as much as he has.
So from his point of view he's on another mediocre team so he should probably be out there playing.
Yeah, but now he is 33 years old with a contract that is expiring (basically). He isn't better than Crawford, Bradley, Lee, Green, or Wallace and he can't play PG so where does that leave him. In his mid-20's or younger it made sense to give him burn, but not at this point in his career.
