I started a similar thread over at Celtics Green, and since celticsblog has such a large following I thought it would be interesting to know when most of the regulars here became a Celtics fan (and by fan I mean someone who follows the team on a regular basis).  My apologies if this has already been discussed, or if this is the wrongsub-forum.

I remember rooting for the C's when I was a little kid around 86 or so, but I wouldn't really consider myself a committed fan at that time. I'd say the 90-91 season was the first year that I became obsessed with the C's. I checked out every box score and always made sure to catch NBA Inside Stuff* on Saturday mornings in order to get some highlights from the Celtics games from Friday night. This is still one of my favorite C's teams. I loved the combination of the old guard (big three) with the new guys like Lewis, Gamble, and Brown. Plus, who didn't love John Bagley and his magical beard?

*This show was a godsend for someone that grew up without cable in a different market than boston. The only time I got to see C's highlights on the local news was when they played the Timberwolves, which was a whopping 2 games a year.

This may seem strange, but i became a Celtic fan by accident, i`m from Norway and i just watched nba games just to see which team i liked, and i watced a celtic game from 2012, and Rondo had a 18 point, 17 rebound, 20 assist game and i became a fan after that, plus i liked his game, never cared who`s in front of him, he had that winner mentality plus he was surrounded by hall of famers. That`s pretty much how i became a fan. Still following the Celtics even though they now having a tough time. Pardon my bad English :)

Like the OP, my earliest memories date back to '86, when I was 6. It'd be a stretch to call myself even a casual fan at that point, not fully understanding the rules or able to pick Larry Bird out of a lineup. By chance, I happened to find myself in Boston for the parade that year because my 1st grade class was on a field trip for the Ugly Duckling tour, or whatever it was called....I had no appreciation at the time for being about 50 feet away from the street as the bus(es?)went by.

My earliest clear memories of being a fan are a couple years later when they lost to the Pistons in the playoffs, Rodman beating up poor Brad LoHaus and then running around celebrating shirtless. I wanted to murder him.

Around 07/08 (yea I know I'm still a newbie)...Rondo was a big part of the reason I became a fan.  What a sensational player.  Thanks, Rondo.

But also the culture of the Celtics.  I wanted to be part of that.  Love the team, the color, the players, the history, and the honor of calling myself a Celtics fan (even if it's to p--- off my friends and people of Chicago)

I was blindly a fan of the Bulls for a long time, mostly because I live in Chicago and my girlfriend of two years at the time was a big time Bulls fan.  In 07, I finally chose a team I wanted to root for.  There's no team I'd rather be a fan of.  Go C's!

I always said when I left the Celtics, I could not go to heaven, because that would
be a step down. I am pure 100 percent Celtic. I think if you slashed my wrists, my
blood would’ve been green.  -  Bill "Greatest of All Time" Russell

Another one of my early Celtics memories is finding a copy of a USA today when I was a little kid (8/9 or so) and reading about how the Celtics players were unhappy with Jim Rodgers as head coach.

I envy all of you guys who were lucky enough to watch the 80s, let alone the two decades prior.  I began watching in 04-05, and I have rarely missed a game since.  Obviously I can't compare with those who suffered through the 90s, but I do remember watching every last frustrating installment of the 18 game losing streak - that was fun.  Up until that time I only, at most, casually followed the nba, and I was excited to watch that season because of Gary Payton for some reason haha.  Pierce quickly became my favorite (man I miss him), and Toine was interesting.  Naturally I missed out on all of that, but I thought the reacquiring of him was hilarious.  Looking back, it might have been better long term if we had missed the playoffs that year.  Weren't Bynum (who was supposed to go to Uconn iirc), Granger, CP3 and Deron Williams drafted in 2005?  Oh well.  I'd rather have Rondo, anyway, but a big guy would have been nice.

Let's see - the whole Gerald Green is Tmac thing was dumb.  I saw something after that which said that Ainge wanted to take Monta Ellis - um, aren't you the person who has the final say on such matters?  So frustrating.  Anyway, I loved watching Delonte, Big Al, Ryan Gomes, and Rondo all grow.  Of course, I also kept waiting for Tony Allen to stop being such a bonehead and actually develop a jump shot, but I digress (I jumped for joy the second he landed in Memphis).  What made me bleed green though was after I got that 25th anniversary Larry Bird dvd, and that was that.  He's my favorite of all time and no one comes close.  I will never tire of watching him on Youtube or anywhere else.  The game just hasn't been the same since he left.  Let's stop playing the Bad Boys and Pat Riley Knicks and Heat pick and roll athon thugball that everyone plays nowadays (Pacers aside, and a little of the Celtics), and go back to the plays of the 80s and prior, or real basketball.  When players had skills and brains.  Please.  Give Stevens the playbook Tommy!

Was actually a Pacers (or actually a Reggie Miller fan) as a kid in the 90s. Thought the whole malice at the palace was going to put me off American basketball for good. Something about the Celtics teams from around 2007-2010 won of back though

Became a fan when KG was traded to the C's. Grew to love the team and the city more than the player.
