  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Asik is valuable because he would fill a huge defensive hole and plays the hardest position to find a competent starter for.  If we got him and the 7th overall pick this year, we could have:

Rondo
LaVine/Exum
Green
Sullinger
Asik

Which right there is about 2x as good as our team is now and is totally plausible.  Then, when you add in the Pierce exception + one of Green or Sullinger and a pick, we could make a move on replacing one of those two for a huge upgrade.  So let's say we moved the TE/Sullinger/1st rounder for Melo.  Then we would have

Rondo
LaVine/Exum
Green
Carmelo Anthony
Asik

Plus we'd have a bench of Crawford, Bradley, Wallace, Bass, Lee, KO, Vitor and our second 2014 pick.   If we didn't get Asik, we'd have to spend all our resources to get someone else who might not even pan out to play the 5, because in order to be truly  competitive you need a legit defensive starter at that position.  By getting Asik, we could fill out the team around him with above average pieces.

Either one of Larry Sanders or Asik would be a great piece in the middle as a rebounder and rim protector.
They're both beasts around the rim and Sanders in particular has plenty of room for improvement on the offensive end. I also read somewhere that his favorite player is Kevin Garnett because of his heart.

He has called out his team mates for lack of hustle and toughness but only when appropriate IMO.

His ceiling is what's scary to me- he's got an IQ on the defensive end with rotations.
Asik is a smart defender and excellent on ball defender in the paint.

The benefit of Asik as everyone knows is the cap hit of his contract. At only 8 million he is the perfect piece for a contender that wants to save as much money on their tax hit as possible.

Putting Asik in that line up instead of Sander could be the difference in signing a $10 miilion guy (ie Lance Stephenson) or settling for a 6 million guy like Bradley.
I'd prefer to keep Sully On the bench and rotate Green and Sully in our line up as starters next to Melo.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

THe most important thing for this Celtics roster is to be patient and work hard, mostly the later. Learn how to finish out those games.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

Hold tight and don't trade for Asik or Sanders.  C's are heading into a tough month and the landscape could change dramatically over the next 4 weeks.  C's could be well-entrenched in the lottery. Atlanta's January is reasonably tough too and they should be under .500 by the time January ends.

At the trade deadline it's possible that both the C's picks are looking like lottery possibilities.  That influences the dynamics:  Trade value of the picks rises; the value of holding onto them rises; the prospect of holding out Rondo is more tempting; perhaps including him in a blockbuster feels more palatable... I don't think there is any need/benefit to make a trade before we are right up to the deadline -- and then only if is a big-win trade.

I do think that Asik or Sanders give the C's something they don't have and something that is not abundant in the NBA. However, neither player is good enough to put us in contention.  I still think the C's would need 2 stars even with Asik or Sanders so the gain to me is not great.  Patience will build the asset value.  Danny should sit tight and wait to reel in bigger fish.

I love what you just analyzed. In my opinion, it's exactly what you said, but I break it down to tier systems

We definitely need a tier 1, a borderline tier 1/tier 2 player, and a tier 2 player

Rondo imo is already a tier 1/tier 2 player. Green in my opinion at BEST is tier 2. I do not see him as a superstar.

I also agree with the part about our team can beat the Heat without the big 3. Sully, Bradley and maybe Crawford is young enough and skilled enough to run their team and bench out of the gym.

To battle the Heat, we definitely need a Durant or Paul George type of player on this team (tier 1 superstar).

Agreed. And judging by the FA classes, it seems like our only chances of acquired said superstar is through draft. (Love isn't a superstar, imo).
