According to league sources, the Knicks' first prong is to try to attract the Celtics' Rajon Rondo. This idea has been tossed around in various forms for a while now, it's not shocking. But the way the Knicks are hoping to get Rondo is a little unusual.

It's not in free agency in 2015 but later this season or next summer when he comes back from a torn ACL. The Knicks are hoping Rondo will be interested in making a maneuver similar to what Anthony did back in 2011 and eventually try to force a trade to the Knicks, sources said.

The Celtics have consistently denied they want to trade Rondo. But once this trade deadline passes, and it isn't clear if he will even play before February, Rondo will have only one guaranteed season left on his contract. Like with Anthony when he applied pressure to the Denver Nuggets by threatening to leave in free agency, the Knicks wonder if Rondo will be able to have a say in where he might be traded if the Celtics end up fearful he'll leave in free agency.

That may seem contrived, yes, but this isn't a made-up scenario. It is a genuine option. You have to give the Knicks this: It has worked before.

I don't know if I have enough L-O-L's for this scenario.

I don't think they can ever truly have faith as long as Dolan is anywhere near the front office.

Hey when you have no resources due to poor management decisions I suppose you have to rely on delusion...

If I was Rondo I'd go to NY... I mean what's not to love? Ball hogging cry baby superstar. Bad coach. Awful owner. Terrible underachieving team. Sounds like a team anyone would force their way to...LOL

Our rebuilding Celtics team is in a better position than the Knicks who were suppose to b good this year. Rondo knows it. Good luck NY, sucks to be you

I think right now the Celts should try to put together an offer to land Melo instead of the Knicks landing Rondo.

But hey at least they have a situation any player would want to fight their way to get to right?

the thing they totally ignore though is that they have no assets to trade for Rondo! None! They mention the Nuggets and Melo, but Denver got a good deal for Melo with a nice package of prospects and picks. They got:

Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors' 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors' 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash.

The Knicks can offer us: Shumpert

Then they say Rondo's pending free agency could force us to trade him or lose him for nothing, but again, the Knicks have nothing to give so we would be better off letting Rondo walk and at least saving cap space if those were our only two options.

lol

The Knicks have been visiting Celticsblog. There's quite a few who are very vocal about how "WE MUST TRADE RONDO NOW OR HE'S GONNA LEAVE!!!"

That's what I'm thinking..they don't have any assets comparable to getting Rondo.

When Rondo and Melo discuss teaming up I wish they would add a big man to their group chat.

Force a trade from a team with future flexibility to a team at a dead end?

The fundamental problem with this idea is that the Knicks already sent their assets to Denver. Boston has to take back matching salary, so what of value does NY have to send to the Celtics to make it worth their while to trade him?

Let's just say Amare's number is no longer part of Melo's "Fave Five."
