I think one of the best things we could do this summer is have a healthy amount of spending money. Here's the 3 team trade i came up with to clear our books.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nnmj5ny

Boston recieves 2 players who expire this summer

Vince Carter's 3.2 expiring

Andris Biedrens 9.0 expiring

Mavericks receive Courtney Lee

Mavs are looking to push for the playoffs and Carter is a defensive liability who is shooting the ball horrifically. Just heard they are looking for a defensive minded guard off the bench who is a solid shooter. Lee fits the bill.

Jazz receive

Gerald Wallace

Shane Larkin

Wallace is a salary dump and Larkin was thrown in to make money work on Dallas's end.

Now i need some help for you guys. Clearly to move Wallace and maybe even Lee we would have to give up some picks. Which picks would you be willing to give up to clear all of this cap space?

This coming summer we would have the following players deals coming off the books

Hump's 12 Mill

Andris's 9.0 Mill

Bogan's 5 Mill

Carter's 3.2 Mill

Marshon 1.2 Mill

That is alot of money off of our books. We can now go on a serious shopping spree for a max guy and make moves to bring back Avery and maybe even Craw.

But is it worth moving the picks the Jazz would want or even Dallas for taking Courtney?

What free agent(s) are you looking to pursue?  I'm not sure this is going to be as good of a FA summer as it had previously been hyped to be.  I don't know if I see Lebron, Wade, and Bosh leaving Miami and if they do, I'm not sure I see them coming to Boston.

Its tough to convince me to give up draft picks in wishful hoping that players opt out of contracts and then choose boston among other suitors.

Good ideas, but I'm not in favor of trading cost controlled draft picks to clear cap room.  The free agency game can be dangerous as some teams overspend and others strike out.  I'd rather the roll the dice with our draft picks, even if the picks are in the teens as Ainge has a nack for hitting on picks in that area.

I would not be in favor of trading a first to move Lee and would only add a late first [LAC pick] to move Wallace if we had another much better plan in place to replace him.

I think the key question here is why?

giving up picks to clear salary just for the sake of clearing salary is just foolish.  that's giving away our best assets to achieve nothing that will help us.  we're not good enough to attract a top FA and even if we were, that's a crapshoot that a top player would be available, never mind would want to sign here.

Keep the picks, move the vets as they become expiring deals or just let them expire.  acquire good young players with the picks and then evaluate that talent to see if it's good enough to contend or just good enough to trade for all-stars to put with Rondo.

The Celtics can use picks in the summer to clear cap space by getting other teams to rent out their cap space and take on contracts.  So, it doesn't make sense to spend those picks on a mid-season trade.  Wait until you actually have a free agent lined up to soak up that cap space.  And perhaps those picks can be used to facilitate a sign-and-trade.

I want cap room for two reasons:

1.  Flexibility in 2014 to pay Crawford and Bradley.  (Give them Bass and Lee's money)

2. Be able to pursue max free agent in 2015

The Stoudamire for Humphries and Wallace deal helps make #2 possible.  Gets rid of Wallace's 3rd year.

Trading Lee/Bass in a straight salary dump helps with both #1 and #2.  You can trade Lee/Bass for:

1. Okafor
2. Biedrins
3. Charlie V plus a little filler

Im sure there are plenty more expiring contracts.  Detroit and Phoenix have decent records, so they may not be trying to tank.  Maybe they would take Lee/Bass to add to their bench?  Utah is in full on tank mode, so a 3rd team would have to be involved as mentioned in above post.

My rough estimate is that it costs about one first round pick for every $8-10 million in savings in a pure salary dump.

The Celtics don't need flexibility to pay Crawford and Bradley in 2014.  They have Bird rights.  So, if you want to create cap space in 2015, Bass has his contract end in 2015 and Lee will be a movable expiring contract.

Clearing cap space prematurely commits you to trying to use the cap space, which may mean you end up signing a bad deal just to use it.  It is better to wait, especially since it will cost picks.

With Bogans' expiring $5M split between Crawford and Bradley, on top of what they make now, that should be enough for both of them, or at least one, which is all we really need anyway.  We can only have one 3rd guard.

Keep Crawford, trade Bradley.  OR the other way around.  The money is already there.  No need to make it complicated.

And with Hump expiring, we can use the $10M TPE from the PP/KG deal next year without adding salary.

We're pretty well set.  I don't see the need to move around the furniture.

That's what I'd do with the current crop, too, with Lee minutes sprinkled around.  Not sure whether next year, we're rolling with the same group, though.

Will we draft a SG?

I would imagine they'll both draw similar contracts around the MLE somewhere.

I'd be prepared to go over the MLE to keep Bradley.  I'm not sure if I am willing to go full MLE-sized contract with Crawford, but my main concern with him is that I would be very uncomfortable with giving him anything longer than two guaranteed years.  That may change if he proves he can accept and flourish in a role off the bench behind two guys he thinks he is a better shooter than, so the sooner Rondo returns, the sooner Crawford can be evaluated in that role.
