Can we use part of this trade exception NOW?

Say I want to trade Courtney Lee for Jeremy Lamb, but Lee make 3.12 more million this year.  Can we use part of the TE to make this trade work?

If Lee makes more, it's OKC that needs the exception to make the deal work, not Boston.

The other option for Boston is to trade OKC a pick for Lamb, using the TE.

The trade exception can be used now.

However, it can't be used to do what you're trying to do.  Basically, it can be used to absorb the entirety of a player's salary, without having to send anything out in return.  So, we could trade for a guy like Lamb, because his entire salary this year fits within our exception.  We couldn't trade for Kobe using the exception, because his salary doesn't fit within the exception.

Also, while it's technically possible to use the exception now, it's unlikely we will unless we clear some other salary somehow.  We're right on the cusp of the luxury tax, and ownership is determined not to pay that this year.

i might be wrong, but i think we're once again limited by the tax "apron" (so we're hard capped at $74M?). last year it was because of making use of full mle. this year it's because, i believe, it's because of Keith Bogans S&T. so in order to use the $10M TPE, we'd have to first cut almost $10M in salaries. or something like that... d:

That's mostly right.  Just keep in mind that you don't have to use the exception all at once, or on one player.  For instance, if the Celts wanted to acquire a $3 million player this year, then wait until the off-season (right before the exception expires) to acquire another $3 million player and a $4 million player, they could allocate it that way.
