While I think some players really understand how the NBA works, I don’t think Melo is one of them
1). LeBron, Wade, Bosh, and Melo all sign extensions in the summer of ’06. LeBron/Wade/Bosh sign 3 year extensions so they could sign their next deal before the CBA changed (likely for the worse) and so they have flexibility to switch teams (or because they all planned to play together from the start). Melo went with a 5 year extension.
And it’s not like Melo didn’t know what everybody else was doing:Wade said he, James and Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets -- three of the top five picks in the 2003 draft class -- all talked about their extensions and weighed the differences between taking the three-year-with-an-option offer as opposed to the straight five-year pacts they were all eligible to receive.
2). LeBron, Wade, Bosh, and Melo all want to play with other stars. LeBron, Wade, and Bosh make sure their contracts line up, take less money to make this possible, don't tell their current team their plans, and leave via free agency. Melo on the other hand asks to be traded (so his new team has to give up assets to get him) and signs a max extension limiting room to sign other stars, but then still says he wants to play with guys like Dwight Howard and Chris Paul on the Knicks. Think he would take less money or line up his contract to make that happen?
3). Melo wants to win, so he forces a trade to a worse team, with fewer assets, with no cap space, and that has to give up more assets just to get him.
Ya so whenever I hear Carmelo talking about recruiting guys like Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, etc. so they can play together on the Knicks, I just shake my head and think this guy doesn’t get it.
Maybe he can be GM of the Knicks or Nets after he's done playing. Apparently has the right mindset for it.
