To make this deal go through on the ESPN Trade Machine, it has to be structured as two trades:

Humphries for Asik (generating a $3.6m trade exception for the Celtics)
Lee and Wallace for Lin, Montiejunas, and a throw-in needed to make the trade legal, such as second-round pick Isaiah Canaan (generating a trade exception of $4.5-5 million for the Celtics, depending on who is added.

The part which would cause consternation in this forum is my proposal that the Celtics include a 2014 lottery-protected first-round pick and another future protected first-round pick.

Daryl Morey is reportedly asking for two firsts as part of any deal for Asik while it has been said that it will cost one or more firsts to get a team to take on Wallace's contract.

I think Ainge would have to make this trade if it only cost him one (protected) pick.  I think Morey might find the compensation acceptable if he got three picks with only top-12 protection.  Somewhere in the middle might have both guys rejecting the deal but seeing enough there to continue negotiations.

Montiejunas doesn't play D.

For one pick I'd do it just for Asik. Asik would look real good next to Sully and Olynyk.

But I suspect it might actually cost more because of Lin and D-Mo.

Asik is the most overrated(and overpaid) center in basketball

Hard to see why either team would be interested in this deal. It's basically a lose-lose.

Regardless, Lin and Asik are almost certain not to get traded together, since they make a combined $30mil next year.

why trade for Lin when you have Rondo?
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Asik is good, but with how this team is in rebuilding mode, giving up any picks right now is a bad idea.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I'm not so sure.

Asik fills a huge, huge hole if he were to come here for bench parts and picks.

Rondo/SG/Green/Sully/Asik looks pretty good, especially if we have a $10M TPE to sign a FA SG this summer.

And Crawford and Bradley as in-house candidates for 3rd guard, KO and VITOR! in the fold developing, and Bass still providing solid play off the bench, I'm not sure what else we're going to do with all of those future rookies anyway.  A few, yes, 9 of them, no.

We have the luxury of multiple picks 4/5 of the next draft; trading the lower of the two to get a long-term starter in a trade isn't a bad idea at all.

That is fine, for the short term but we need to think long term. This team should hoard picks, make as many as they can and quickly cull any disappointments from the group.

Asik seems to be underrated around here.  Andris Biedrins, Kendrick Perkins, and DeAndre Jordan are worse centers making more money than Asik this season.

They make a combined $10 million this season.  And they each only count $8-ish towards the cap next season.  So, it's not quite as bad as people make it out to be.

Morey was looking to trade Asik for a good SF or a big PF.  Now, he is reportedly asking for two firsts for Asik.  This gives him a little bit of what he wants, but not his ideal choices.  The Celtics pick up an above-average center who is better than pre-injury Perkins and dump the contracts of Wallace and Lee.

He is just a contract who is there to match salaries.

I dont see how Asik is underrated. He plays 18 minutes a game and averages only 4 points 7 boards and .4 blocks a game. Overpayed, but thats what happens with centers I guess.

how much does Asik have left on his contract? I'd do this trade with ONE draft pick thrown in, and nothing more along with the players that you mentioned

Last year he produced 10/11.7 in 30 MPG while playing elite defense.

His production this year has been pretty consistent with last year, a slight dip but that's not surprising given the turmoil of him playing with Howard, not playing at all, and now being given spot minutes as a true backup to Howard.
