19games into the season if the draft was today the Cs would have the 9th and the 15th pick in the 2014 draft.

Looking at draft express that would give the Cs.

#9 Cauley-Stein (love the pick)
#15 Seldon (solid and from boston, also available Robinson III and james young)

While neither have the transcended start potential that the top 6 have both picks are very solid and have lower level allstar ceilings.

Wouldn't we have the 19th pick from Atlanta not 15?

yep.

nbadraft.net doesn't even list Cauley-Stein (they believe he isn't leaving)

It seems to me there is a very clear drop off starting at pick 7 (on both of those sites) and there isn't going to be much difference between 7 and 14 this year.

In terms of projecting available draft picks this far in advance it probably doesn't matter.

True but it is important for people to realize that the bottom 4 to 6 playoff teams of the east will get worse draft picks than teams out west with superior records. Though I'm not sure that was the source of his error.

I just looked quick at the league wide standings, didn't factor in the different divisions.

The 19th would push us below what I would consider this drafts 3rd tier. At that point I would take a flyer on a player like PJ Hairston (off court issues), Jerami Grant (raw) or Alex Poythress (under achieving)

As of today, 12/3, if the season ended now we would have the following picks:

The Celtics currently have the 9th worst record.
Brooklyn has the 6th worst record.
Atlanta has the 16th worst record.

Atlanta has the rights to the Net's pick so we would have their pick instead of the Nets.

Four teams in the west (Lakers, Suns, Grizzlies & Pelicans) have better records than Atlanta (16th worse) but by virtue of the fact that they would all be out of the playoffs if the season ended today, they ALL slide into the lottery, and Atlanta slides down to #20.

As to our own pick:

The 9th worst record gives us 17 lottery balls and would give us the following odds on various picks:

1st    .017
2nd   .020
3rd   .024
9th   .813
10th  .122
11th   .004
12th   .000  (very tiny)

So, basically, we'd have a 6.1% chance of a top-3 pick, an 81.3% chance of the 9th pick and a 12.6% chance of a worse pick.

We would have no chance at the 4th-8th picks.

So we would most likely pick #9 and #20 if the season ended today.

Picking today at 9th and 20th, the Chad Ford board would grant us....

Noah Vonleh and Andrew Harrison.

I'm kinda bummed, you guys. I think I liked our Sullinger-Melo draft better.

If those were our two picks I'd try and use the 9th and maybe some of our future picks and a player to move up as far as we could.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

What team is going to trade _down_ from the top 8 in the 2014 draft?

It could very well happen, but only a few spots.

Something like the OJ Mayo/Kevin Love swap where the team higher on the board extracts something while still getting the player they truly wanted at their slot.

I can't envision Danny offering much just to move up from say, 9th to 7th.    And I don't think any of the top 6 will budge.

I think it more likely Danny trades out of the draft entirely than trading up.

I think if we end up at 9th, that's where we'll probably pick.

Granted, an early look.

I think #9 isn't realistic. The rest of Celtic's schedule looks like 24-27 wins total. (making my July "39 win" prediction Nostradamoslike)

This gets them a decent shot at #6. A center would be nice and Embid will be gone?

With the Atlanta pick I will guess on Selden as an Ainge "type" of player. The Celtics need another guard to add to the 16 they already have.

This puts me into the "trade the pick(s)camp." Ainge needs a center to put next to Sullinger.

You surely meant to say Tonstradamus here.

I think we should have a decent shot at getting a top 6 pick. We are one injury to a green/sullinger away from being a pretty poor basketball team that could lose a serious number of games.
