Maintain a flexible salary cap situation where you can make a trade to clear cap space to sign a free agent.  Maintain a stockpile of draft picks you can use to trade for a star.  Draft well.  Be patient and wait for another GM to be stupid.  Don't get tunnel vision over acquiring a specific player.

What kind of free agent would you be interested in signing? Doesn't have to be anyone specific, just the position and kind of player. I've had a hard time myself finding a free agent that is a good enough player to make a big difference in our team,that would be interested in playing here as not many are. Kevin Love came to mind but he can't even opt out until 2015.

I admit to having some interest in seeing one or more Gasol as a Celtic, but I think the Celtics could benefit from adding two very good players rather than one great player.

I'd like to find a defense-first center and a three-point shooting sixth man scoring wing who isn't a defensive liability.

I think this is the role Jeff Green was built for.

  This is the problem with threads like this. Nobody knows of any particular player that will be available. Odds are high that somebody will be, but without knowing who will be it's impossible to speculate.

That's a fair point, I'd encourage you to then give the type/position of the player, what kind of role they fill. That way we can see how they fit into the team you hope to see put together.

I think that no, Indy's defense would be too much. Miami I think is actually the better matchup. But as far as defense goes, I'm actually okay with it. Plus defenders at 1,2,5 and Sullinger is looking like a keeper long term.

It's the kind of matchup where you think, 'yeah...we've got a shot .'

Right, I would think that the plan would be to hope melo can match lebron offensively shot for shot, asik and sully push bosh around inside, and bradley and rondo contain wade while giving you what they can offensively. Also on the IND point I agree, IND would stomp that lineup.

That sounds uncomfortably like what the Knicks have been the last 2 seasons before this one.

Even when Durant was the second place prize I don't think I've hoped a guy would end up in green more than I hope Parker ends up in Boston. Bill Simmons (I think) summed it up well by saying, 'He looks like Carmelo Anthony, if he was fun to play with'.

I'd prefer Josh Smith to Melo. Younger, cheaper, likely more attainable. I'm just not fully convinced that Dumars won't decide to pull the plug on the experiment in Detroit.

Part of me thinks Ainge should go after Asik, and part of me thinks that a leaner, faster option at center would be preferable.
