Quote
A veteran scout, interviewed earlier in the day and speaking on the condition of anonymity, called Kidd’s bench comportment “terrible,” observing that the play-calling has fallen mostly to his top assistants, Lawrence Frank and John Welch.

“He doesn’t do anything,” said the scout, who has watched the Nets several times. “He doesn’t make calls. John Welch does all the offense. Lawrence does all the defense. … I don’t know what Kidd does. I don’t think you can grade him and say he’s bad. You can give him an incomplete.”

The same scout said he had counted only 15 plays run by the Nets in the games he has watched. Multiple observers have noted that the Nets offense lacks any discernible flow, as if the stars are all simply taking turns with the ball.

Ouch. I wonder what Paul and Kg think about their coach.

Didn't Larry Bird do the same thing with Rick Carlisle (offense) and Dick Harter (defense)?

Rookie head coach for a struggling team with aspirations is an easy target. I do think he was a bad hire, coaches take time to figure out what works. The Nets don't have that sort of time or leeway even before the trade.

Yeah he did, I know NBA writers still make fun of him about it at times or denigrate how much of a coach he truly was.

Did anyone expect anything different from someone who has been a coach (not an NBA headcoach...a coach of any kind) for less than a month?  He is learning on the job.  I have no idea if he will ever be any good.  But he is supposed to be terrible right now.

I don't think it was the best hire, considering the aspirations of a championship with a very tight window. Probably should have started off as an assistant, but he didn't hire himself. I think the Nets wanted Jason Kidd for the name and for a fairy tale of Kidd saving the Nets.

...  would have made a lot more sense for them to have hired Lawrence Frank as head coach, and Jason Kidd as his assistant.

Agreed. I think someone like Lionel Hollins would've been a better choice.

Exactly.  Or someone else entirely.  They must have known they have a 1 or 2 year max window.  It was just stupid to make that trade for proven champions and then hire a complete unknown who doesn't have time to learn on the job.

So... he's a brand new coach with zero experience, an icon of Nets basketball who was hired largely to be a figure-head... and he's deferring to his [excellent and experienced] assistants... and that makes him incompetent?

... after twelve games?

Jason Kidd was hired June 12th, the trade only came together on the eve of the draft. Which was June 27th.

Ah, ok.  He could have been the first coach fired before his first practice :)

They must have had some idea they were getting Pierce and Garnett.

who can blame Jason Kidd? to me, it's unbelievable they gave him the job. if you're going to put together an aging team (with pretty questionable chances) for a one year championship run -- hire a respected vet coach, even if they're a career assistant.

considering they have one on the bench (Frank), you have to wonder how long Kidd keeps the job considering Prokarov isn't concerned about the money they'd have to pay him.
