Centerpiece of a future trade, maybe.  I'm sure the Celtics value him... a lot more than the rest of the league, apparently.  The sooner the rest of the league starts to value Rondo as much as the Celtics do, the sooner he'll be shipped out as a centerpiece of a trade that nets us our future.

Sure.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Uh oh. This definitely means Rondo is on the block.
Just kidding.
Ainge is saying the right things. He does mean it too, except that no one is untouchable.
What Ainge really means would go something like:
'He's the center piece of our future...he's not going anywhere. ..unless we get a great fantastic offer for him'.
Who knows what would qualify for a great offer.
Would a top 10 pick or a top 5 pick be enough?
Who knows, he's certainly doing the right thing.

Funny he mentions the starting All star thing when he started because of Rose's injury. I like how he threw that in there with the 4x All Star note.

Anyway, he's done the right thing protecting Rondo's trade value whilst letting it be known that we wont give him away for salary relief.

I think coming up to Christmas and All Star break we are going to read a tonne of Rondo trade rumors so get ready. Ainge is certainly ready.
The flood gates are about to open on Rondo...but that doesn't mean he'll go.
Just remember he's only got a season left on his contract after this season so Danny may get some offers that he'll have to think long and hard about.
If the Pelicans gave their top 6 pick in a poor draft for Jrue Holiday then Danny may get some juicy trades dangled in front of him for Rondo.

I don't really see Danny giving up Rondo for anything less than a top 8 pick + assets.
I believe unless he gets an amazing offer beforehand that he'll wait to see which disgruntled stars he can put next to Rondo first.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

"What's real is, he's going nowhere."  Wow!  Those are the strongest words I've heard yet from Ainge to indicate that Rondo is "going nowhere."

I love it.

I'm glad that Ainge is smart enough to realize that you don't trade away a talent on the level of Rajon Rondo for a couple of bucks of cap space and a few lottery tickets.

But I bet you could tempt him mightily with Powerball.

It's almost sounding like Rondo is going to retire as a celtic. Sort of the same spiel Ainge said about Pierce before he traded him away this past year.

I guess if that happens Ainge will say "Rondo will always be a celtic at heart"

The truth.

I can't recall seeing any rumored Rondo trade that wasn't legitimately insulting.  Rondo is worth far more than we ever see offered.

You can't really think Rondo worth much more than  Steph Curry or Chris Paul?

I agree... if the most any team wants to give up for Rondo is Iman Shumpert, Rondo isn't going anywhere.  At least for a year and a half... then he'll probably flee in free agency.

I hope Danny means this, but more so I hope Rondo has bought into the rebuild plan. If we pull off a nice FA signing or Trade or Grab a big draft pick to put a little more talent around Rondo then this will be much easier. If we are stuck with the same role players, bad contracts and dont score big in the Draft after this season? Rondo may not give Danny time to build around his centerpiece.

Well that might change by Dec. Rondo is probably one of the few premier players(and pg) playing in not a premier team.

Some team who is desperate to go far and without a legit pg could overpay such as

Detroit - Either Drummond or Monroe + a 1st pick

Houston - Asik, Lin + 2 first

NYN -  Shumpert, Hardaway JR., 2 1st picks

Sac - Mclemore

Nets - Plumlee, Taylor, 2019 + 2020 + 2021 1st picks

Sort of joking about the Nets trade idea, though if it did happen, we would have the rest of their 1st picks for like the next 6 years.

When were those offered?  That was talk about what Ainge wanted for Rondo, not the other way around.

Knicks don't have tradable 1sts until 2018.

I don't know if McLemore would be an 'overpay' as much as a 'steal'

Which Houston 1sts?

What does Detroit do with Jennings?

Yeah, my bad, I misunderstood what you meant by offered as "trade rumours we hear reported"

Those were rumors were Ainge was reportedly the one doing the offering.  Has there been a rumor of another team asking about Rondo and offering something good in return?

I wouldn't be shocked if the Celtics have to receive a player who is at least around the level of Steph Curry for Ainge to consider trading Rondo.  How many players in the NBA fit that description?
