The Boston Celtics are interested in Kendall Marshall, who was waived after he was traded by the Phoenix Suns to the Washington Wizards.

Marshall is a pass-first point guard that struggled in the Suns' system as a rookie.

The Celtics, however, do not want to be pushed above the luxury tax to become a repeat offender.

PS I actually clicked through to the Washburn article, and that's a more tepid, "The Celtics would likely be interested in Marshall if his salary didn’t push them above the luxury tax and make them a repeat offender, something ownership desperately wants to avoid during this rebuilding phase."

Makes sense.  If they don't think Pressey is rotation worthy at this point, might as well give Marshall a look.

They have nothing to lose. Maybe get him into Maine?

Oh great, another PG that can't shoot and is not quite tall enough to guard bigger 2s. Exactly what we need.

Yup.

I'm fine with trying to bring in a PG, its been bad without one just like last year. But Marshall isn't going to help anyone based on his play for the Suns.

It would be nice if they can pull this one off.  He has size and great court vision.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBXMJ6bUnYo

How much salary would the Celtics need to clear in order to bring in Marshall on a minimum contract and stay under the luxury tax line?

The Celtics are not going to be cutting anyone to sign someone else. If they do they exceed the tax line and become repeat offenders. So this is nothing more than rumor mongering on Washburn's part to sell ad space, get web hits and sell newspapers.

I expect trades from the C's that will be even financially or that will cut salary, but this team is in no way, shape or form going to go over that luxury tax line this year. Not under any circumstances.

the guy I'm surprised we haven't tried to bring in is Roddy Beaubois. The kid has talent and his performance suffered from a series of injuries, but he should be ready to go now.

According to this Lucky the C's are just $175K under the luxury tax line

http://www.celticslife.com/2013/10/celtics-cut-remaining-camp-invitees.html

And I believe every contract they have is guaranteed through the whole year so they would have to shed at least enough salary in a trade to open up a vet min slot to sign someone.
