The owners were already mad about the "superteam" issue, if superstars take that much of a paycut to sign more talent that's going to get even worse.  Now you have the union and owners both angry.

I'm not saying there can't be some bit of a paycut, but too much just won't happen.

And when we say they took a cut to be in Miami, lets realize the tax breaks of that state.

Owners I'll give you, but they're really powerless to do anything as long as the current CBA is in place.  Still I don't understand why the union wouldn't like it.  It won't devalue the market, it would mean more money for other players, etc.  (which I mentioned above).

Why specifically wouldn't the union like it?

There are a range of players that make the max.  The Union likes that (obviously) and yes, even if LeBron didn't make the max there are players below his skill that would.  However, it just doesn't set a good precedent, like I said before.

Obviously say a player like Rondo still gets a max contract on his next one even if LeBron takes less, but over time maybe that goes away if you see people taking discounts.  The players union is there because players and owners aren't all friendly and have different goals.  Players don't want to start giving up salary as a group.  If that was a pattern that kept having over time, eventually I think salaries would go down.  If I was an owner and saw the top few players take discounts I'd look at a Rondo and say "but this guy is worth the max?  Nah" and I'd let him walk.  And that sentiment would grow.

Look at the NFL this year.  Many think the owners colluded to bring the free agent market down in a big way.  Cliff Avril was a FA and it was thought he would get a 5 year contract for huge money, but he ended up going to Seattle for 2 years and not much.  Yes I'm sure part of that was he wanted to be on a good team but the market wasn't there how he thought it wasn't going to be.  There were a bunch of examples this offseason.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen that LeBron gives them a bit of a discount, but it won't be much.  It only happens in Miami because in the end they are making at least as much (probably more) than they would at the max elsewhere because there's no income tax.

Between all the factors, this is why you don't see stars take big discounts.  Owners and the union both have reasons to push against it for their own reasons.  I think the owners would be the first group to riot if that happened (and for good reason, the coat tail riding is already extreme for lower level players, if it extended to stars that would be too much).

LeBron only cares about LeBron.   Why would he care he left them once.   Nothing he has ever said has ever indicated that he cares about anything but himself.   I see him more likely to go to LA to replace Kobe, folks.   The stars and he can make in roads into the movies.  Space Jam 2 here we come....

One thing is certain -- we have not heard everything he's ever said.   We think we know these guys but we really don't.  We speculate -- sometimes correctly, sometimes incorrectly.
If Lebron only thinks about Lebron, it's possible that a return to Cleveland would be very nice for his ego -- he would get a ton of love.   But it's also possible that he has a sense fair play and perhaps understands that he wronged his hometown and wants to right the wrong.  It's possible.

Something , now that Howard deserted them ,  is discussed daily .......

They are going to discover replacing Kobe [dang] near impossible .    They even mention tanking , knowing not a lot of talent is looking to bolt to the Lakers other than Carmelo ....fine they can have him , if they can even get him. ;D

As would I.  I think Lebron just simply opts in and rides out his contract through 2016.  He will then see where the Heat are and make up his mind, but I truly think he goes back to Cleveland then to finish out his career.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Could happen, yeah.

Melo already said he wants to retire a Knick, by the way.

I think there is really 0 chance both go to LA.  Melo wants to be a Knick and LeBron is trying to be the best player ever, the last thing he wants to do is instead just become one of the Laker greats.  If he does his thing in Miami or Cleveland, he stands out and alone.

I hope he does return to Cleveland.  I didn't start (really) hating Lebron until he took the easy way out and went to Miami.  I respected him in Cleveland; the Miami WWE stuff has ruined that respect.

I think there's some potential redemption in Cleveland, and playing next to likeable (for me, anyway) players in Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao might reduce some of the "King James" stink.

This.  The Lakers can't really offer him anything he doesn't already have; despite the hate some might have for him, he will easily be in the discussion for one of top 10 players of all time once he retires.  He's got all of the money and fame he could ever dream of and it's far more beneficial for him to create his own path than follow in the path of previous Lakers greats.  Besides, if people thought he took heat for joining the Heat, just imagine how much criticism he'd face if left for L.A.

I'll give him a pass on The Decision--the blame there lays with Maverick Carter and NBC(?).

I imagine it was pitched to him as "hey, we'll do a TV thing for your free agency and raise money for the Boys and Girls Club."

Oh me too, I get that angle of it and that angle is under appreciated.

But if you're LeBron, you have to realize how you are crushing basically your home town on live TV and call it off.  It's a move of someone who is isolated in his own world (and yes, listening to his people), but to me that is understandable and I'd probably be the exact same way if since I was 17 people were saying I could be the greatest player ever.

It's funny to think about what the reception to it would have been if he went back to Cleveland.  LeBron would be a charitable hero.

I would love to see LBJ back in Cleveland, and I'm sure Cav's fans would do a complete 180 after hating on the guy for the past couple seasons. I can see the shirts now "THE KING HAS RETURNED"

Depends. You could very easily take a disparaging slant on it, especially if the Heat three-peat.

"With nothing left to prove, LeBron James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers--a franchise, and a city, he once called home. James, 31, abandoned Cleveland on national television in 2010 with "The Decision," an hour-long NBC special that saw him leave the team to chase rings with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and the Miami Heat. A decision that lead to the first three-peat since Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant's early-2000's Lakers.

After amassing three titles and an unassailable legacy, James has come back to Ohio. Now that he no longer needs to win, it seems that the Cavs are finally good enough to play host to the King. Again."

Something like that.

Oh you definitely could spin him returning later that way, but sorry, to be clear in that original post when I said that I meant if at The Decision LeBron had decided to just go back to the Cavs vs going to Miami, the whole Decision thing would have been viewed way more positively.
