Does this normally mean anything, that the "girlfriend asked for charges to be dismissed and refused to testify against him."

Like the investigation turned out she was probably lying/exaggerating so she dropped the case?

Or maybe he paid her to drop the case so it won't hurt his career.

Or several other scenarios I can think of.  Does it typically paint what happened in a certain light one way or the other?

I'd tend to say it means "trumped up charges" but there are other possibilities.

I tend to be innocent until proven guilty on this kind of thing though (which is funny to say because that's how it should be... but it isn't nowadays).  Everyone buries athletes when they get involved with this kind of thing but they don't have the whole story, and people often ignore the incentive and frankly malice some women could have to bring about cases like this (I felt this way about Birdman last year).

Of course, could be wrong, just my 2 cents.

My guess is they kissed and made up, he promised; "I'll never do that again, baby, I love you," and they moved on. 

Hopefully, it's not serial and they have both learned to come to a better place in their relationship, free of outbursts of rage and jealousy.

And the same goes for every domestic case I've ever been involved in. Usually the victim doesn't even show up to court. The Commonwealth may have pursued further if the police had more evidence and Sully had a history, but doesn't seem to be the situation here.

No, there are no assumptions you should make based on general cases, because cases are specific.  In this case, it sounded like something serious enough happened that Sullinger was given a stay-away order despite the girlfriend requesting that one not be given, and serious enough for Sullinger to attend counseling.  It also seems serious enough to have ended their relationship.  Mind you, there is certainly a second side of the story that will not come out due to charges being dropped, but if I had to guess, her reluctance to testify was due to a desire to move on with her life .  Maybe a little money changed hands too, but probably enough to get her on her feet, since she presumably needed a place to live, and not a ridiculously large amount that was a money grab.
