Strange, oblique, Doc Rivers reference

From a NYTimes story today re: a challenge to the defense provided by Kennedy-cousin convicted murderer Michael Skakel's celebrity lawyer, Mickey Sherman:

"Mr. Skakel said Mr. Sherman called himself a “media ****” who, during trial preparations, took a potential witness to dinner in Chicago with Mr. Bolton and the basketball coach Doc Rivers (The actor Harrison Ford dropped by). Mr. Sherman said last week that he used the celebrities’ presence to entice the potential witness so that he could learn more about how the person might testify. (He was not called to the stand.)"

(Bolton is the singer Michael Bolton.)

The most bothersome thing about that paragraph is its use of "the" before every job description—"the" actor, "the" basketball coach, "the" singer. Just say "basketball coach Doc Rivers." Good grief. Some journalism there.
