4.   Houston
3.   LA Clippers
2.   Brooklyn
1.   Miami

This ranking is very unscientific, purely based on looking at the rosters of every team in the league and trying to determine who has the most talent on their squad.

I would love to have placed the Celtics above both Washington and Cleveland, but it's hard to say that we look better than either of those teams on paper right now.  On the other hand, I don't think either of those teams are such a sure thing that we can't overtake them if things break right for us (and wrong for one or both of them).

I'd love to know what others think about these rankings.  What are the major beefs and/or placements that you agree with.

If anyone else feels like posting their own complete rankings, that would be cool.

On paper, I think Boston are somewhere around 18th-21st in terms of talent. They lack top tier talent outside of Rondo but they have good depth of contributors.

Guards - Rondo, A.Bradley, C.Lee
SFs - J.Green, G.Wallace
Bigs - Sully, Hump, Bass

Faverani looks like he will be a dependable contributor too which would make the team 9 deep in quality NBA players. Gives them better balance too with his bulk/size in the paint. Then there is Bogans who is a strong third stringer. And maybe Olynyk is ready to play although I am not sure about that yet. The rest I expect to hurt the team more than they help it (Pressey, Crawford, Brooks).

I believe a team with 8-10 steady role players can play .500 basketball in the NBA. You don't need star talent to be a mediocre team. You need to be a great team but you can be mediocre with strong depth. And Boston have pretty strong depth which could have been even better if Danny Ainge was bothered to sign a backup PG and viable shot-blocker in addition to Faverani. But Ainge clearly didn't want to help the team get to .500 so he didn't do that.

Unfortunately, with (1) Rondo's unclear return and (2) Brad Stevens looking a major question mark ... I am not sure Boston can fulfill their potential as a team this season. Am I thinking they are going to end up lower. Maybe just outside the bottom 5.

I find it easier to separate the conferences so

East

Chicago
Miami
Indiana
Brooklyn (better playoff team than regular season team)
New York
Washington
Toronto

Cleveland
Atlanta
Boston
Detroit

Milwaukee
Charlotte
Orlando
Philadelphia

West

Wow, the top 6 and middle 4 of the West of the West are very tough to rank. You could put them in almost any order and be happy about it.

Oklahoma
San Antonio
LA Clippers
Golden State
Houston
Memphis

Minnesota
Dallas
Denver
New Orleans
Portland

LA Lakers
Utah
Sacramento
Phoenix

Top 10:

1 - Miami
2 - San Antonio
3 - LA Clippers
4 - Oklahoma City

5 - Chicago
6 - Memphis
7 - Indiana
8 - Brooklyn
9 - Houston
10 - Golden State

27 - Boston

26 - Sacramento
25 - Utah
24 - Charlotte
23 - Toronto
22 - Milwaukee
21 - New Orleans
Can't argue with the bottom of your list.  I could see Orlando and Charlotte flipping spots if Orlando's youth movement develops and well, Charlotte is being run (into the ground) by Jordan.  I could see the C's possibly finishing better than
Philly, Phx, Orl, Char, Tor, Utah, Sac and NO.
Not all of them but probably most.  End up with something around the 7th/8th worst record.

As for the top, I've got to go with Brooklyn at #2.  An all-star (past or present) at every starting position and a deep and solid bench.
1 - Miami
2 - Brooklyn
3 - Indiana
4 - SA (thanks mostly to Pop)
5 - OKC (Westbrook's injury and need more support for Durant)
6 - Chicago - (Rose needs to shake the rust off)
7 - Houston - (DH plays like it matters again)
8 - Memphis
9 - GS (still on the rise)
10 - Clips (they'd be higher if they had a good coach instead of Doc)

Obviously there is some bias here, but even still if Brooklyn is healthy come playoffs they are the 2nd best team, to me.  But they do need to prove it (why I won't rank them there yet).

Great size at every position, VERY high offensive potential, good defensive potential, the most talented starting 5 in the NBA, a strong bench.  I also believe in Kidd as a coach.

A team that can strike Miami where it can be beaten (inside, with PG play, with three pointers).  If KG and Lopez are out there what is Miami's answer for two skilled 7 footers?  And if they even go small, I'll take AK over Battier or whoever they go small with.

I also think Houston could be a great team.  If Howard is playing like Howard of the Magic they have basically a better version of those Magic teams.  But yes, also need to prove Howard can be top level.

I'll Just do a top 10:

1. Miami (bounce back, healthy year for a motivated Wade.  I've hated him but he is oddly underrated now and people are counting him out)

2. Spurs (I finally won't count them out this year, Leonard poised to make an All-Star level jump)

3. Indiana (elite D, players who can get a bucket in crunch time, better bench, young players improving)

4. Nets (see above, possibly the NBA's most complete team, just prove it)

5. Chicago (elite D, still basically no different than the team that had no answer for when LBJ was on Rose though.  A bit overrated, even as I rank them at 5.  Though maybe that's me reacting to Bill Simmons, who has them somehow at 1 over Miami)

6. Houston (better version of Magic teams with a coach I like more)

7. OKC (not enough scoring, still don't think Westbrook Durant combo could win a title)

8. Clippers (if only they had better bigs, outside Blake)

9. Memphis (Always wish they would perform better, love the team but not enough outside shooting for a post up team that desperately needs it)

10. Golden State (up and comer.  If Curry and Bogut stay healthy, could easily jump up the list.  Iggy is a great fit and complement to this team)

I agree with that. I think I'd move the Clippers down to #7 (above Houston, below Brooklyn), though.

I really like Redick and Dudley, and I think the shooting they provide is going to do wonders for that Clippers lineup.

Plus, Doc may not be a perfect coach, but he's a heck of a lot better than VDN.  Think about how much better the Bulls got when they replaced Vinny with Thibs.  The Clippers were playing at a 60+ win pace for a lot of last year.  This year, I think they'll break 60.

I don't know what that means for the playoffs, but that Clippers team, if healthy, should mow down most opponents in the regular season.

Yeah, ok. I wasn't really thinking about the grind of the regular season when I was looking at these lists.

Yeah, ok. I wasn't really thinking about the grind of the regular season when I was looking at these lists.

Usually forgotten when these "rank teams" things get going -- what's the criteria?  I'm thinking in terms of the regular season, assuming relative health for everybody.

Ranking teams in terms of playoff viability seems silly considering there are only 5-6 teams that actually matter as far as the playoffs are concerned.

I was definitely thinking regular season standings when I started this thread.
