Except for trading rondo and sully, is there a package Danny could put together that joe dumars would like enough to trade us greg Monroe? What would that package look like?

There is no package we can currently offer Detroit for Monroe including Rondo and Sully. I'll 'splain.

1) Dumars has too much to lose and too much invested in Monroe and Drummond to not give them an honest shot at co-existing. Their skillsets on paper never did and stil don't really seem like they optimize the other player's abilities, but really they're a solid 17fter from Monroe away from having the best frontcourt in the NBA for the next 10 or so years. He's gotta let that play out, for a while at least.

2) He's also invested quite a bit in Jennings and Smith. Far too much to move any of their 4 best players before seeing how they gel. He's a big believer in talent=wins, and he believes in this collection of talent, he's probably staked his job on it. He's gotta see if they're gonna sink or swim before he makes a major move (anything less than a homerun for Monroe). The clock for him probably starts around the trade deadline if the fit doesn't look great, but a move in the offseason of 14 is much more likely, especially on draft night when he could move Monroe for a player's rights, since a few of the teams have traded protected rights to this seasons' pick away.

3) If Dumars were going to move Monroe for Rondo, he would do it only after Rondo looks back 100%, and if they can move Jennings as well. So that's likely again waiting at least until the trade deadline.

From the looks of it, getting J-Smoove might be more of a realistic option than Monroe.

Right now as I type, Monroe and Drummond are having a fantastic night, a much better night than they've had in every other preseason game this year. And Pistons fans are attributing this to the lack of Josh Smith.

Jeff Green could provide them with the spacing they lack with J-Smoove, along with the far better shot selection.

This is absolutely not a knee-jerk reaction to the preseason games. I am absolutely alright with keeping JG and am not that high at all on Josh Smith. But for the sake of exploring possibilities, this would be the closest.

Not having seen a single minute of Pistons preseason ball, I've got to agree that Smith would be more likely to be moved than Monroe.

Dumars could much more easily declare the Smith experiment a failure by the deadline if the team isn't doing well. Smith probably wouldn't care much about being traded: he'd still get paid, and (ostensibly) he'd finally be playing with his old teammate Rondo.

It's an intriguing scenario, for sure.

Since they're probably the biggest risk/reward starting five in the league this year, I think any moves will wait until the deadline.

This.
Give them as much time to gel and learn how to play together. If it doesn't work out expect a deadline deal.

I like the idea of going after Monroe as well. I think the answer is, not yet. Monroe's going to want a 5 year max (which they are saving for Drummond and each team can only give 1 player a 5 yr max). If this season the Pistons don't do as well as planned and, knowing he will likely walk, he's obtainable. Then it becomes a question of if the Pistons want young talent (a la AB, Green, Olynyk, etc) or some of our future picks. I would guess some mix.

He can't exactly walk, though. He'll be an RFA.

Right. Unless Jennings turns into a complete train wreck, I really don't think Monroe is anything else but a pipe dream for us.

For say...the Blazers, maybe someone like the Hawks, Monroe is possible, but for us, with a Rondo being the only real chip we have that could tempt Detroit, there just isn't a deal that makes sense.

I think DET is in "win now" mode - see the Jennings/Smith acquisitions - and would move Monroe only for a proven star. We don't have any of those, except Rondo if he comes back healthy.

I think even if we were a bottom-5 team at the break, our 1st round pick wouldn't be enough to get Monroe. He might be just good enough along with Rondo to get us out of the bottom 5 by the end of the year.

I have wondered since the signing if Detroit always had a trade in the back of their minds.  It's just such an odd fit with Drummond and Monroe.  Detroit would be foolish to trade either unless they get a top notch player in return.

Smith's signing may have been more about cashing in on the cap space to later use as trade bait than the actual player.  It's an odd theory I have though.

Very excited about the defensive potential of a Josh Smith (PF) and Andre Drummond (C) duo.

Oh my, imagine adding Rondo (PG) to that. The defensive quickness and overall athleticism. That would be the makings of something special.
