Coming clean about the 2012 draft

So I don't like to admit my mistakes. I really hate being wrong. But I have to come clean about something. I was mostly wrong about the 2012 draft. I watched it all the way through. Here is the (relevant) time-line:

Draft starts:

I sit, hoping C's don't trade up for Rivers. Also hoping Sully falls.

Rivers gets taken at 10, I wipe sweat off my brow.

Royce White gets taken at 16, I am disappointed. I wanted White a lot. thought he had some Lebron-esque qualities.

Nicholson gets taken at 19, relieved again because there were some Celtics-Nicholson rumors.

Our pick at 21 is up, Sully is still on the board. I wait for the pick and then I'm on my feet, fist pumping like Louis CK.

Now I'm basically yelling at the TV, "Pick PJIII! PICK PJ3 FFS". We pick Melo, I am disappointed and swearing a lot.



So my confession is that I wanted to pick White and PJIII over Melo. All 3 have been unproductive to this point and while I think Jones has a chance to make an impact as a reserve in this league it looks like all of the obscenities I spewed at Ainge for letting PJ fall were unwarranted so far. My bad Ainge!

So far I've done alright with most of the 2012 draft. I didn't want White because I thought he'd end up a headcase. I thought Austin was over rated and wanted no parts of him under Doc. I didn't want Melo because he came off as the typical "I only play basketball because I'm tall" undeveloped goofball 7 footer. I wanted Andrew Nicholson cause he reminded me of Al Jefferson. I thought Sully was a no brainer. Arnette Moultrie and Quincy Miller are the guys I wanted that were left after 21 I think it's still to early to tell with them.

I thought Michael Kidd-Gilchrist would be much better than he has been. I was high on Barnes and Drummond, which look great so far, and weary of Rivers, who has been worse than I expected. I also though PJ3 would have been very good and was upset we chose Melo over him, and although PJ3 has been a deep bench player so far, at least he's still in the league, Melo is very close to being out.

I also though Lamb would have performed much better so far, but he still has time to do so. I was high on Royce White, and didn't expect his anxiety to be much of an issue. Although he was a disaster last year, he's getting on track in Phili so who knows.

I thought Lillard was a reach, I thought MKG was a no-brained for 2, and I thought the Celtics were morons to pass on both Tony Wroten and PJIIII. Never believed in Fab Melo, but I guess that's been vindicated. I was a big believer in Roycd White.

I find confessionals like these fun and interesting to look back on.

I was psyched that Sullinger and PJ3 fell to us.  I wanted us to take a chance on both of them and hope that 1 panned out.  Wasn't upset with the Melo pick but didn't love it either.  I wasn't high on anybody else who was drafted after Rivers except Sullinger, Pj3, Melo, Crowder and Teague in that order.  I think I liked Meyers Leonard too just because we needed size.

I was high on Sully and PJ3, stoked when they fell to us. Disappointed in the Melo pick. I was high on Crowder too. Disliked Austin Rivers strongly, thought Waiters would be a bust and I thought Barnes would be higher

After Sullinger, I wanted Royce White and Arnett Moultrie. I hated Fab Melo, though, so this isn't such a big confession. Both of those guys look to me like they could still have better NBA careers than Fab Melo.

My big confession how bad I wanted Hassan Whiteside instead of Avery Bradley in 2010.

Wanted PJIII or Moultrie, too. Was disappointed right after the pick.

I'm probably the worst one here in that I actually deluded myself into thinking the pick might not have been a bust after all. Wasted time following Melo's D-League stint and justifying his non-performance. Jeepers.

Ezeli sure would look nice next to Sully and Olynyk. He looks like that 3rd big (a true defensive anchor) the big rotation needs.

I too was disappointed we missed out on Royce White.  Now I'm relieved.

I wanted Jeff Taylor or Festus Ezeli ahead of Melo.

I desperately wanted Sergio "Spanish Chocolate" Rodriquez as our point guard of the future.  I was disappointed when we went with the defensive specialist from Kentucky.
