Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has stated publicly — several times — that point guard Rajon Rondo wants to return from ACL surgery by training camp and play on opening night.

Yet while speaking with WSYX Columbus on Friday, teammate Jared Sullinger shared a different timetable for Boston’s four-time All-Star.

“He’s back working out again and hopefully he’ll be back by December,” said Sullinger.

It’s unclear if Sullinger actually has any inside knowledge of how Rondo’s rehabilitation is going, or if he was just repeating something he heard a while back. But there’s obviously no reason to rush Rondo back to the court until he’s healed 100 percent.

No way man Danny said he was gonna be back by training camp and it was just a partial tear and Adrian Peterson(!) and there's absolutely no way he'll miss any games and Sully doesn't know what he's talking about and Rondo is too competitive to still be recovering by the time the season starts.

Did I miss anything?

More conjecture, speculation, hear say etc but no concrete clarification from anyone in a place to give it. I wish this league was like the EPL where if they say a guy is out for 6 weeks with say, a cracked metatarsal, then that`s how it is and we can move on to something else.

Rondo will return when he returns. Sorry for the dry comment (actually I am not). Coming back from ACLs is a very tricky deal. Each individual athlete is different. I guess I am a little surprised Sullenger talked about it in public.

This wasn't a Derrick rose injury. Hell want to cone back but hes smart enough to know what date is actually best. I bet hell be close to or on the bench every game but I'd say late November earliest late December/January latest. Trust me I'm a doctor
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

I believe Rondo will come back stronger. I am very optimistic about his return. Hopefully in the meantime, he is still improving his game somehow - either shooting around, improving his jump shot/free throws or just running simple drills.

As you said, coming back from an ACL injury is tricky. And hopefully it didn't hit him mentally like it did with DROse. Hopefully he comes back like Adrian Peterson, just breaking records and tearing it up in the NBA

For all the "mental questions" that came up around Rose's slow recovery, the fact that he wanted to spend more time with his kid after not having a father figure in his life never seems to come up.

And it shouldn't come up.  While that may be commendable in some ways, when you are being paid, what, $16 million a year, spending more time with your kids is not a reason to miss games.  He can give back the money, if he wants to spend time with his kids.  But, if he wants to be a professional basketball player, the only think that should keep him off the court is injuries.

Agreed, and I'll add that using "wanting to be with his kids" as an excuse doesn't sit well with me. It's a rationalization that of using his kids to hide behind, when really they had nothing to do with Rose missing games.

And there's no reason to buy into that narrative.

I haven't read or heard anything that indicates that Rose was using wanting to spend time with his son as a reason for not coming back last season.

I have read that while he was unable to play basketball, he used that opportunity to spend a lot of time with his son.  That's very different than him saying that's a reason that he didn't return.

ABeast:

Bradley said he doesn't ask Rondo about his health when they correspond during the offseason, but acknowledged the team might not have its All-Star point guard at the start of the season. Bradley is willing to help with ball-handling duties if asked.

"I’m not sure what position I’m going to play, whatever I can do to help our team out, that’s what I’m going to be open to doing," said Bradley. "Rondo will still be there to play that leadership role and help everybody out. Even if I’m not playing point guard, I’m pretty sure whoever is, Rondo is going to be there in his ear, trying to help us become the best team we can be."
