The idea is not only that the organization wants to present itself to the public in a certain way, but that the practice has ties to broader disciplinary issues. If a player follows the rules of how he should look, he's more likely to act appropriately in other ways, too. There's plenty of room to argue against these practices — I think they're needlessly conservative and ineffectively superficial — but they exist.

However, it apparently won't last long, because, according to Smith's father Earl, Woodson has already told J.R. to get rid of it. From Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com on Twitter (via SLAM):

Said instructions stem from Woodson's grander desire to keep the infamously volatile Smith in line, which makes particular sense now that the Knicks have committed large sums of money to him for

We've been debating on the whole Shabazz getting kicked out of Rookie camp for not following rules (which some thought was dumb because he's an adult). This just further proves that it's not necessarily about the rules, but whether you can follow it without being disruptive (even if you don't really agree with it). I'm sure Jr just wants to stay under the radar as much as possible.

Besides, that blonde isn't good on him. Reminds me of a mix of Sisqo and Rodman.

I honestly could care less of the color of a person's hair as long as the person performs and behaves.

I'm totally for making players follow rules and acting professionally, but I don't really agree with this one.  A lot of white players used to have blonde highlights.  Should Iman Shumpert have to cut his hair?  What about Copeland last year?

I realize Smith has a history of being a moron, so public relations relating to him is more important, but I don't agree with this.  Woodson could recommend that he change his hair, but I think that should demand that he do it.

Dru Hill!

On topic, though, this is something that I agree with Woodson on.  Doing something just to get attention or to stick out like a sore thumb is 9 times out of 10 never a good idea.  He's a professional for a world class organization, he needs to fit the part.

Fitch should have made Chris Ford lose the perm.

hair coloring isn't illegal nor would it affect his play.  big deal over nothing.

if anything, it might improve his play since that hair would distract anyone -- particularly the guy guarding him. ;)

"Professional"? So should "Professional" abstract painters wear a suit and tie, and only rock crew cuts? Who really cares? He died his hair, he should be able to do whatever he wants with his body it's his body.

It's not like JR got a middle finger tatoo on his forehead. Calm down old man.  ::)

I think if it was coming from another coach then it probably would be a problem. Woodson is a no nonsense type of guy and I think they respect that out of him. That's like if Jordan Crawford decided to dye his hair orange and Doc (while he was still the coach) told him to change it, I bet Crawford would respect Doc enough to do it (whether it was a big deal or not).

Phil Jackson was also a "no nonesense" type of guy. He had a guy named Dennis Rodman, they won 3 championships together.  ::)

I'm not old, I'm all about the image. I always want to present myself like a professional and look like one vs looking like a thug or a bum. I'm not saying he should wear suits and ties outside of the court, but something as simple as dying your hair? I mean, I don't take anyone who dyes their hair seriously.

And as the above said, this is coming from his own coach. He could choose to keep the dye for all I care, but I essentially take the coach as your manager. If you can't do something as simple as that request, then you're not a real professional. Don't forget, he's not only representing himself, he is also representing his team.

We're not talking about Phil,we're talking about Woodson and obviously it's a bid deal for him, he's the coach  ::). It wasn't a big deal for Phil (different coaches, different expectations.)

With Phil, his only concern was winning multiple rings. He didn't care that Jordan had a gambling problem,or the antics that Rodman would pull. Mike has yet to win, so he's trying to set a tone and doesn't want any distractions.

So you didn't take Ainge seriously when he put together our championship team?  He had a horrible orange/red dye job until a couple years ago when he went natural.

What image? 75% of the league is tatted up. Obviously you can't remove tats, but these guys should represent the country they live in. We live in America, freedom of speech/expression is the upmost important right we have. Judging a person because his hair is dyed, is real dumb to me. JR should be judged by his play, not his blonde hair.

Far too many people in this country (Boston especially), give kids who look a little different a weird look when they walk on or off the T or on the streets. WHO CARES? Maybe that kid is the next Steve Jobbs, next Jay-Z, maybe the next president.

Bottom line let the kid live. What's "acceptable" should be based off JR's behavior/play on the court not how he chooses to dye his hair.
