I am pretty careful to not use hyperbolic tone in subject titles, but I'm just being honest here people.

Detroit trades:  Charlie V
Orlando trades:  Aaron Afflalo

Detroit has a gaping need for a SG who can actually shoot.  Afflalo does that tremendously and plays great defense as well.  A very desirable player for this team who is looking to attempt to contend.  Aaron's age is right in that range of Detroit's core.  I think he's a great fit.  Stuckey moves into a 1/2 combo guard role off the bench which is exactly what he is suited for.

Orlando has no business employing Afflalo as they will be a non-contender for the remainder of Afflalo's contract.  They trim 2 years off his contract and open up playing time at SG for their true SG of the future - Oladipo.  It might even make Orlando worse this year too, which is better for them of course.

If Orlando says no, then Detroit includes Caldwell-Pope and I think the deal is done.

I think Orlando asks for an unprotected/loosely protected first rounder instead of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (who may have the most last remaining-scion-of-a-lost-empire sounding name in the NBA right now). NBA GMs are treating draft picks--and more importantly, the idea of getting draft picks--with incredible reverence under the new CBA.

And I think Detroit should still do it. TP for what is, indeed, a No Brainer.

I'd like to have Afflalo on the Celtics. For all the guards that we do have on the roster, most of them can't shoot.

I think Orlando would counter with your same offer, but I imagine Detroit holds the line and says no.

Then Orlando thinks about it... Caldwell-Pope was the top PG picked in this draft.  Orlando has a need at PG as Nelson is aging with no young PGs behind him.  I know next season is supposed to be a deep draft, but are they really going to get a better PG outside of the lottery (where Det's pick will likely be) than the #1 PG of this year's draft?  Is that chance really worth turning down this deal for?

But Orlando's actually dealing from a position of relative strength here--Detroit needs Afflalo because they're trying to make it to the playoffs, but the Magic don't need anything from Detroit as they're in tank mode, and they're the side providing all the favors, both in the player of need in Afflalo and the roster relief/wasted salary that is Charlie V.

So possibly the Magic come back with Charlie V and Caldwell-Pope in addition to a top-twenty/fifteen/ten protected first rounder in 14/15/16/17 (17 is unprotected) for Aaron A and a minor player that Detroit likes to make the money work.

This is fun, by the way.

I do agree that Orlando is dealing from a position of strength, but I think they're asking for too much.  Orlando would definitely like to clear Afflalo's salary off the books.  It could put them in a position to only have 28 mil or so in committed salary next offseason with the Florida weather and no income taxes to entice free agents.

Maybe a pick further in the future like 2016 is more likely

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
No way Detroit includes Pope too lol. Afflalo's a medicore stiff. Hard worker but just not very talented. That would be like giving up a lottery pick for Wes Mathews.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Caldwell-Pope is not a PG, he's a shooting guard. Not sure why you think he's 1. Plus, there have been several reports that Oladipo, much like he did in Summer league, will be used as a point during the pre-season.

Note: Looked up his numbers at Georgia last year and Caldwell-Pope averaged 1.8 apg  and 2.0 turnovers in 33.9 mpg.

it's a no-brainer for Detroit, not for Orlando.

Afflalo's not great but seems to be pretty solid and actually worth his contract (for now).  he gives Oladipo time to develop this year.  if the rest of the youth there develops, Afflalo is a nice rotation player to have as the team improves and when his deal is up, they'll have a much better idea if he's worth keeping or letting go.

better yet, after this year he becomes an expiring deal that a number of contenders would like - a good SG on a reasonable, expiring deal.  his value goes up a bit in the next offseason.
