I participated in it over the weekend.

Crazy global competition where teams have 48 hours to create a short film.  http://www.48hourfilm.com/  ... They had it in Seattle this weekend and I was the leader of one of the 61 teams that entered.

Pretty simple premise.  You show up at 7:00pm on Friday night and they tell you the required elements for your film.  This year's requirements:

Prop - Cheese
Character - Gino/Gina Asplund, a Barista
Line of Dialogue - "There must be something in your ear"

Then you pick your genre out of a hat.  I got stuck with the genre of "Fantasy".  Definitely not what I wanted.

You then have to race to finish it and turn it in by 7:00pm on Sunday.  I turned it in with only 4 minutes to spare.

I also made the unwise decision of trying to fill basically every major role.  I produced, directed, co-wrote and edited.   Half my team flaked on me, I couldn't find one of my key actors, we had constant sound issues throughout the day... just a complete nightmare.  The most stressful experience of my life.  I woke up 9:00am on Friday and didn't go to sleep until LATE Sunday night.

Anyhow... here it is.  "The Emerald City".  Just an FYI, it's VERY heavy in Seattle humor. Bellevue is the name of a city that is separated from Seattle by Lake Washington... often referred to as "The East Side".  A bridge connects them, and that bridge happened to be closed this weekend.  A real pain in the butt for me since I live in Bellevue and shot the film in Seattle:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIrqtmzItPA&hd=1

Contrary to how bad it looks, we actually won an Audience Choice award.  Crapping out a short film in 48 hours is really really hard.  This was one of the better ones  :)

WOW!  Congratulations.   I loved it....very, very clever work, especially under time pressure.  I loved it...(and I know nothing about Seattle  ;)).

Once you got the prop "cheese", you must have known you were a winner. I've seen your work before. ;)

Seriously, that's super-impressive for 48 hours.

It was completely overwhelming.  Fantasy was basically the last genre I wanted to have.  There's no way I was going to get a bunch of awesome costumes and swords to run around the woods with ... I only had so many people helping and then half my team flaked on Saturday.  But Seattle is known as "The Emerald City"... so it seemed logical.

Really really challenging.  If I did it again, there's no way I'd try to fill that many roles.

I enjoyed it.

Nicely done, especially for that time frame ... I don't think people realize how much work goes into film production.

I have a friend from Australia, (his name is Jason van Genderen), who was a 2011 Tropfest Finalist with the following (very short) film ... thought you might enjoy.

Thanks and a TP for posting ... keep up the good work!

If you watch closely enough... there's a reference to a witch and flying monkey.

And she appears again at the end of the credits ;)

Yeah that was really really well done.  How much time do they get to do their films?  The 48 hour project is a little different, because you literally are racing to crap out something that includes a random prop, character and line.  It's not easy trying to do something like Sci-Fi with 48 hours... or Fantasy... or Horror.  Casting, scripting, figuring out costume and makeup, filming, editing... all in a couple days... it's insane.  Most people just stay in one location and keep it as simple as possible.  I was a little crazy to drive all around Seattle on a weekend when traffic was absolutely brutal.

Where'd you get the helicopter?

Awesome work, I really enjoyed it! Impressive. I loved the guy with the corn the most, that was hilarious!

Yea, I have to admit I'm also wondering where the helicopter came from.

Yeah, that's impressive work ... Jason's was done in his own time, not under pressure or constraints, which is a heckuva lot more easy than what you accomplished.

Again, I think some people really don't appreciate all the work required in such a production, and to throw it together in 48 hours from concept-to-finshed product? Wow.

Truly amazing, you should be very proud ... I can tell it's a labor of love.

I'm in the studio right now working on a new album (CD), and doing the drum tracks for the first song alone has taken almost two weeks, (that's just one instrument, so you can probably tell how long it will take to finish the song, let alone an entire album).

I can't imagine having to do it under such tight time limits ... truly inpressed with your work here, man.

These contests are a great way for people to get a bit of a feel for what it's like to be involved in film.

And they're also a ton of fun. I haven't done one in five or six years, but I recall them fondly. Lots of chaos.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

My girlfriend's aunt bought a groupon for a 20 minute Seattle Helicopter ride and gave it to my girlfriend, her mom and me for Christmas.  She neglected to remember that my girlfriend and her mom get very motion sick.  So it was just sitting in a pile of documents since Christmas.  I knew this was coming up, so I reserved the copter for 4:00pm on Saturday "just in case"... and I was pretty upfront with them about what I wanted to do and told them that I'd very likely call and cancel Saturday morning.  Luckily we found a use for it.  It worked out.  I had other surprises planned depending on the genre we picked.  Fantasy was definitely not one I had planned for... so we just sort of came up with that concept and went for it.  I did have a few other potential surprises lined up depending on what genre we picked.
