So few, relatively speaking seem to understand Doc's situation beyond the fact that he left and it was odd and messy and too long.

He sits in my sig because he is a piece of work.

Let me address the Ray haters 1st:

He is a basketball player and he exercised his rights within the framework of his contract and the league rules. Get over it. If you ever believed he was more than a hired gun that's on you. What's in your head?

Doc broke a contract stop communicating with his employer and began negotiating on behalf of his soon to be new employer. He didn't inform the Celtics with a phone call or through his lawyer he did it through Stephen A Smith. He didn't open his mail or discuss his future with the Celtics in the interview with Stephen after that "crazy" rumor first mentioned by...Stephen A Smith.

Quote
1) It's weird that he appeared on Stephen A. Smith's show and had no discussion whatsoever about his future. Smith, after all, started a rumor earlier this offseason that Rivers, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce could be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for Blake Griffin, Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler. A little while later, Smith stood by the possibility of that rumor coming to fruition and added that Rivers might be sick of working with Ainge. While Ainge has denied the claims vehemently on multiple occasions, Rivers still hasn't addressed any of the reports.

Now remember the letter that was sent on May 8th. Unopened.
That was sent a day after Danny and Doc met which was a day after that "Crazy" Stephen A rumor.
What was said in that meeting can only be speculated but it was leaked that the letter was a reminder of his contract and the Celtics desire that he honor it.
For 3 weeks he is talking with folks not named Danny Ainge, or Wyc Grousbeck. He was talking with K.G. and elements of the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers leaked that Doc himself had told the Clips not to include Bledsoe in any deal (what happened to him?)
After Ainge walks away for the 2nd time a story that is actually 2 years old about Rondo is leaked by somebody trying to burn Rivers bridge into ashes if there was anything even left? If you timeline things you can wrap your head around it a little better and I did that on this site once. Rivers went on WEEI and made note of meeting regarding the Clips which might seem like everyone misunderstood except that it was after this debacle started and just before it finished and way after the going off the Celts grid . It was after the 1st leak 4 days after the playoff exit and after meeting Danny after the "crazy" story and after the unopened letter sent the next day and after the interview with the guy that broke the "crazy" story 3 weeks later and after the 1st negotiations broke down. In context it just makes Doc look worse and WEEI took him to task for it.

The dude is a flat out liar. Ray did nothing remotely similar. I used to hate on Ray but Ray...Ray got nothing on Doc. Doc screwed the Celtics in a way I haven't seen in Pro sports. Never. Doc was advising them on drafting and free agent moves while the Finals were going on and he was an employee of the Boston Celtics. The Nets deal...could we have gotten something for Pierce? Maybe? K.G.? (tinfoil hater wearing folks could speculate that this was an idea layed out a year prior when K.G. got the clause and they coulda MADE this happen were it not for the spectacle of the bizzaro it turned out to be and a distraction during the finals)

Tinfoil aside..

Doc and Ray are not remotely on the same level. It makes no sense. One of them hurt your feelings and one of them did mush more than that. It's a list. The players on this roster and off of it are related to Docs behavior at the worst possible time. I think it's never a good time to mess with your employer in the most public of ways but he really hurt the Celtics. I am thankful that Wyc went on the record and said this ENTIRE thing was Doc's. There was no mutual anything to any of it until the end when it was impossible to do anything but let that corrupted self centered contract breaking tampering pigeon fly.

I would never cheer Ray but cheer Doc? C'mon, you gotta be kidding? If Pat Riley is a Celtics Nemesis from the outside what is a guy that did his damage from the inside?

Nobody is accusing him of breaking the rules. If you're going to "address Ray haters", I'd say the first step is to acknowledge their actual grievances.

kg and pp both deserve the warmest possible welcome. a standing ovation is the least expected.

But you follow a team.Once the game begins pp and kg will work their b***s off to beat the celtics (and i honestly hope they do so otherwise i`ll think less of them). You just can`y cheer of the opponent. You just can`t.

Nothing go do with breaking rules. But there are unwritten rules that is better not to break if you dont want to have your rep tarnished.

Ray allen didnt go to miami bc he was born there or wanted to play with a close friend or former coach. He went there as an ignorant fool to play for the enemy. He goes anywhere else in the league to play, then there is no contraversy , no chance to hate

All three get my applause. Doc was still the coach for a long portion of my fan-hood, and I respect him a lot. KG, PP, and himself (And, yes, even Ray) were all huge parts of the restoration of our organization.

They'll always receive applause from me for what they've done for us in the past. They all loved being here, and they worked hard for us.

I was initially a little bitter towards Ray, but whatever. He's a class act and we were lucky to have him while we did.

I do hope we stomp the Clippers and Nets, however. And the Heat...do I even need to say anything about the heat?

I will cheer PP and Kg.  Boo Ray Allen until the end of time.  Cheer Doc in all years except for 2015 because that's when we have their draft pick.  Hopefully KG and PP pull a Chauncey Billups and come back in time.

Pierce and KG should always be acknowledged as Celtic Greats. And Ray should always be given his dues for his contributions as he had to sacrifice his game more than anyone else. As for Doc, my opinion has never changed on the guy-Doc does what is right for Doc no matter what he says about team and commitment. When he signed his last contract with the Celtics he made it clear that he knew it would cover a rebuild effort. At the time I thought that it was total BS as Doc always got top dollar both as an announcer and coach and he would bail as soon as something better came along. My gripe is that he was never honest about how he operated. He got special consideration for his family obligations, he got top dollar and he spent a lot of time away from Boston. However he bailed when things were going to be tough. I don't boo players or coaches. However I definitely ignore those that are different than they preach.

I'll cheer for all.  Even Doc.  He was here during Danny's 1st rebuilding,  just didn't want to go thru it again.  Understandable.  Didn't desert KG and PP to go and coach CP3 - It was a clean breakup,  so I am ok with it.

I have and will continue to cheer all of them (including Ray).

I don't understand the hypocrisy of many of the fans on this board, who so easily talk about trading away players like Pierce and KG (who, yes, were under contract), and then in the same breadth get upset when Doc (who was under contract) or Ray (who was a free agent) choose to make a change.  You can't have it both ways. Both gave a lot to this team, and booing them when they initially get announced is just plain unappreciative of Celtics history and their place in it.  Now during the game, that's a different story.

And of course, Paul will get my loudest and most heartfelt cheers.

Its not having it both ways. Its not fair the org/fans have the edge, but it is what it is. And fans are not unreasonable. If a star is unjustifiably traded/fired, the owners/management will then feel the wrath. With doc he had a contract to fullfill. He not only did not , he was dishonest about the whole process. He said and his kids back him up that it was hard to leave, there were tears then why leave?? Bc you are scared of rebuild?

With ray allen im ok he left. But going to a team that you just faced in the finals is a big no no. Celts offered him a better deal and he could of gone anywhere else. Its almost to the extent of ray allen now going out with your ex gf.  You just dont do it

If someone boos on PP or KG he should quit being a celtics fan. Ill cheer for all of them :) Doc has been great, all good things comes to an end. I'm not sad anymore he is gone but I appreciate all he is done, he is a celtic. Just like KG and PP who should both get a retired number ASAP

The people who want to make this about free agency, are fighting straw men.

It's about how he left -- with an insulting counter-offer, and as a whiner -- that makes him despised. Nobody denies his contributions while he was here (no Banner #17 without him), or his rights as a free agent, and anyone who makes the issue about those things is conceding the argument by changing the subject.
