Assume for whatever reason superstars become available - who are today's equivalent of KG and Ray at the time we traded for them? Long time All-stars starting the back end of their careers with a 3-5 window of very good to great play that have not yet won a championship.

I am asking  who in the league - if we are to make a similar trade in today's reality - would be the KG and Ray Allen that we should trade for to pair with Rondo (modern day Celtic holdover like Pierce was).

Everyone and all picks are on the trading block except for Rondo.

Examples:
What if Carmelo has a falling out with the Knicks?
What if Love wants out of Minn?
What if Durant and Thunder ownership have a fight about something?
What if Harden and Howard don't get along?

Etc Etc..

Who here thought that we would be able to trade for Ray Allen and KG back in 07?

I think Love is headed to LA. No way Carmelo leaves NY, and Durant seems quite at home in OKC.

However, this thread is a great think piece, and I'll come back once I've thought about it a little more.

if we could somehow get durant then wow. But, i would probably say Melo is close to a maybe, but i see him choosing LA over us anyday of the week, and even before that im sure he loves NewYork.

I dont think K.Love wins us a chip.

I say, Our draft picks going around this time can win us a chip, faster then going the KG Ray route, unless we can trade for KD.

Marc Gasol.  I can even see him being someone who will realistically be available.  Not this summer, but perhaps by next summer if the Grizzlies completely collapse and decide to blow it up and rebuild.  For example, Zach Randolph is injured and Ed Davis and Kosta Koufos are complete busts.  Memphis has been known to do deals primarily motivated by money reasons.

I sincerely believe there is a non-zero chance that Sullinger and picks get traded for Gasol next summer.

I think this time if we are to vault back to contender status it will be on the back of a guy we get in the 2014 draft. If we are to trade for someone Kevin Love is a good bet, Larry Sanders will be a restricted free agent next year maybe we can wrestle him away from the Bucks, the same could be said for DeMarcus Cousins.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

What if you were to pair for the 2014-15 season K Love with Horford or K Love and S Curry  with Rondo?

I like Gasol add him with Harden (doesn't get along with Howard and McHale does us a another favor) and your new big 3 are Rondo, Harden  and Gasol.

Rondo, Harden and Gasol. Would you build around that?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I am certainly on the Demarcus train. I also see Lamarcus Aldridge as a possibility. It might actually be easier to land a very good big man than shooting guard (I like the Marc Gasol idea). What possible shooting guards are there? Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson? It seems there are a million shoot-first PGs, but not a ton of [possibly] available SGs.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
LaMarcus Aldridge should be a primary target.

He already said (according to reports of course) that he wants out of Portland.
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

Here are some possibilities:

Kevin Love -Doubt he stays with Minny beyond 2015
Marc Gasol - Ditto with Memphis
Lamarcus Aldridge - Ditto with Portland

Carmelo Anthony - Interesting point by the OP. At first though you would think, NO WAY. Either New York or Los Angeles. BUT, what if next summer the Celts offered the Knicks a package revolving around Jeff Green?

Would New York say no? Wouldn't Melo like to play with Rondo?

Paul George - I know his contract is up in a couple years. If Indy doesn't improve this year, does George want out?

John Wall - Possibly, the Wizards and Wall have a falling out if Washington doesn't improve and Wall wants more money. Obviously, this would likely require a Rondo trade.

Kevin Durant - Doubt he goes anywhere, but I have a feeling that Danny would do anything to land Durant, whether trade or free agency (2016.) After all, if he had a choice between Oden/Durant, Ainge was going to select Durant back in 2007, if I am not mistaken.

Al Horford - Big fan of Horford's game. I believe he becomes a free agent in 2016. If Atlanta fails to improve the next couple years, does Horford become expendable?

Joakim Noah - Ditto with Chicago. If the Bulls don't improve the next couple years, does Chicago give up on Noah and find a new 1-2 to match with Rose?

Another angle on the Thunder is If the Westbrook/Durant combo isn't winning them 'chips - do they trade one of them?

Would you trade Rondo for Westbrook?

Noah might be the second best defensive big man behind KG.  He would be an interesting piece to add.

Noah
Oly
Green
??
Westbrook

Cannot argue with you on your point.  It is a valid one.  with 9 firsts trades have to happen so the question is who are we going to trade for?

Can Sully or Oly become the next Big Al and Ryan Gomes?
Is Marshon Brooks a Green equivalent?

Which diamond are we going to flip our picks and semi-precious young talent for? this obviously won't happen today or in the next few weeks but in the next 10- 30 months.

Hopefully not Carmelo.  Not a fan.  Love or Cousins sound good.

As far as guys who are at or slightly past their primes on the last legs of big deals and are attached to teams that would deal them for assets that don't include Rondo:

Bigs:
Zach Randolph
LaMarcus Aldridge (which I would absolutely love. A Rondo/LA pick and pop seems like it would be a thing of beauty).
David Lee
Pau Gasol

Wings:
I actually couldn't find any of these guys who fit this criteria, which is all right if we hold on to Jeff Green.

Guards:
Likewise, there's a real shortage of quality 2 guards who're looking available in free agency or through trade.
