Hey guys i know really random but I have a pretty good sore throat going on since this morning when i got up for work at 6. I took 3 ibuprofen in the morning and it didn't do much. Then took two dayquil pills, and took a nap for about an hour. Went played some basketball and now wanna take nyquil, but am kinda scared i might be taking to much for one day. I was wondering do you think one nyquil pill is enough?

Thought for sure this was going to say "would you trade a bottle of NyQuil for Andre Drummond?"

If its been about 4 or 6 hours it should be fine.

I think you can do about 3 or 4 doses between the two before some thing bad happens.

Should be fine if you've only taken the day quil once today.

Dayquil directions are 2 softgels every four hours.

Nyquil two every six.

The main thing in Nyquil that helps you sleep is an antihistamine, similar to Benadryl.

Seems like plenty of time's elapsed to take two.

Take another....nighty, night.

Taking 2 nyquil would put you near but not over the 24 hour recommended limit for acetaminophen, since its been 4 hours you should be fine. My wife has been taking more than that with her migraines for a while now.

Its right on the box of both medications probably.

Acetaminophen dosage is more a long term concern anyways, unless you try to take way way way more than the recommended dosage. It damages liver function.

Well, the max of Acetaminophen is 4000mg (1000 mg 4 times a day)

Ibuprofen you want <1200 mg per day (so depends on your pill size).

Dextromethorphan you want < 120mg per day.

Dayquil has acetaminophen, Phenylephrine and Dextromethorphan.

Nyquil has acetaminophn, dextromethorphan, and doxalamine succinate

So look at the amounts in your nyquil/dayquil and figure out if you're close to that.

If you're worried, take just benadryl (diphenhydramine), which does the same thing as the doxalamine succinate in nyquil but doesn't have the acetaminophen and dextromethorphan in it.

But it sounds like you're ok.

I'm always shocked its that high, I've been hearing less than that for years and years from doctors.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'd have to take a lot of it to have any issues.

You'll be fine, though the only thing in Nyquil for a sore throat is acetaminophen, so, unless you're using it for the hypnotic in it to help get you to sleep, (and all you have is a sore throat), you'd be better off just taking more ibuprofen, (or acetaminophen tabs).

Actually, it's quite safe to take much more ibuprofen than this, depending on the problem, but you should do so at your doctor's advice ... Tylenol, (acteaminophen), can actually be more harmful to your kidneys and liver, especially in the doses you've listed here. Stick with the ibuprofen, you'll be fine.
