I was reading online that Russell Westbrook is expected to be back from his torn meniscus for the beginning of training camp in October.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/22431344/russell-westbrook-is-off-crutches-says-im-back

Coincidentally, a report came out a few days ago in the Herald that Rondo is also expected back for opening night in the upcoming season
http://bostonherald.com/sports/celtics_nba/boston_celtics/2013/07/agent_rajon_rondo_s_on_target

So it got me thinking, any chance the Celts and OKC consider swapping star point guards, as a change of scenery might help all involved?

For OKC, I keep hearing that Westbrook and Durant sometimes conflict because both need the ball in their hands. What better guard for Durant to work with than Rondo, who is a distributor?

For the Celts, now that Pierce/KG are gone, they need a player who can take over and Westbrook can score with the best of them.

Here's the trade idea I was thinking
Boston gets: Russell Westbrook, Nick Collison and Hasheem Thabeet
OKC gets: Rajon Rondo, Brandon Bass and Fab Melo

I think a lineup of Westbrook/Lee, Bradley/Brooks/Bogans, Green/Wallace, Sully/Collison and Humph/Olynk would be fun to watch.

For OKC, Rondo/Sefalosha/Durant/Ibaka/Perk isn't too shabby either.

Anyway, just a thought.

As much I am not a fan of a shoot first PG, I think with harden gone, okc actually needs a another primary scorer next to durant.  On top of that, most folks would probably value Westbrook more than rondo.  So in effect, okc gives up more value in this trade and also likely gets worse as a result.

So if I am okc, I don't make this trade.

That's a poor trade for OKC.

OKC says no. Not sure if Danny would be so high on this trade either

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I've always thought Rondo would be a much better fit for them considering how many shots that Westbrook takes away from Durant from his chucking habit and his mediocre court vision skills./passing.
They lose Westbrooks finishing ability on the break but they gain arondos ability to get Ibaka and Perkins/Adams far better looks around the rim and Durant gets more open opportunities on the wing(good shots that he never gets because westbrook cant see it happening or simply cant get the ball to him), and also gets another 10 shots a game through being given the ball more on purpose-which can only be a good thing.

If they'd kept Harden Rondo would be perfect but they'll need a serious 2 guard which hopefully Lamb will give them now.
Other option is to ask for Reggie Jackson, steven Adams and Lamb and give them Rondo and they slide Westbrook to the SG spot.
We get some young studs and they get the second player next to Westbrook that Durant needs to win a ring.
Might not be enough for Rondo though.

Probably nothing would happen until they both prove they've gotten over their injuries properly given they rely on athleticism so much.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

If OKC gave us Westbrook for Rondo, I'd say yes no matter what else was involved.

Unfortunately, OKC is not that stupid. Some franchises might think it's a good idea to trade the sixth-best player in the league for the 20th, but OKC is not one of them. Alas.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I do it because of age, but I still think a pg like Rondo is harder to find than a pg like Westbrook. I also think that FAs would rather play with Rondo - if / when we ever get our salary under control...and please don't give me that no FAs want to play in Boston. We lose out to LA, Mia, NY, and Chi, but are definitely in the next tier.

Yes. In fact nobody wants Rondo. Westbrook is younger

We should keep him then. We're just as likely (if not more) to win a title with him than almost anyone people want to trade him for.
