so, i guess officially we should not refer to this trade as the DJ White trade in the future.  ;)

Done! =)

What's our trade exception look like?
$3 million

http://www.netsdaily.com/2013/7/12/4518242/deal-is-done-kevin-garnett-and-paul-pierce-are-brooklyn-nets

pretty underwhelming trade exception. From what I understand, we can't package it with other salaries, so who can we get for 3 million/year that is worthwhile?

You can package it with other salaries but when you aggregate the salaries coming back, on of the players salaries that is coming in needs to fit into the exception.

C's probably just let it expire and keep the savings. Or use it next year. Or use it at the very beginning of the 2014-15 season in a trade.

I don't get the reported size of the trade exception. It should be bigger.

Pierce, Garnett, Terry, and White combine for just over $34 mil ($34.4 mil if Terry's trade kicker of 7.5% increases his salary for trade purposes).

The players coming back, minus Bogan's undetermined contract, add up to $24.1 mil.

[Edit: I think I see why it might be that small, if the salaries aren't being aggregated together on each side.]

That's about what I was expecting, a trade exception around 7-10 million, which is why 3 million looks disappointing. I'm no expert on the CBA though.

three million TPE? that's kinda lousy. I hope someone's math is just really bad when they were reporting that. Saving a 7M+ TPE after the draft next summer would be a nice thing, potentially. We find ourselves with a top-five talent and the space to get a mid-high end UFA? That'd be ideal, but alas.. Likely not.

The Celtics can use it to be on the receiving end of a salary dump of a former first round pick, the way the Suns picked up Marcus Morris for a second-round pick at last year's deadline.  Not big enough to take on most guys drafted in the top ten, but it would allow the Celtics to gamble on a guy with fading but still palpable potential, maybe a guy who had his playing time blocked by two veterans ahead of him on a playoff team.

So, mostly getting a potentially useful player for nothing if a team needs to make a salary dump to avoid luxury tax or clear cap space for the summer of 2014.  Of course, Ainge needs to be careful to keep the Celtics out of the tax this season.

It's possible that the trade is being broken down into separate transactions for some reason. Potentially:

A. Pierce for Humphries and Kris Joseph
B. KG for Wallace
C. Terry for Bogans
D. DJ White for Brooks

Each of those component transactions works in terms of salary exchange, I believe. Would also help explain why White was a last-minute addition to the deal.

However, it would be at the Celtics' decided disadvantage to do it this way, rather than as one big transaction that would yield a single large exception.

Perhaps Bogans can't be aggregated with other salaries as part of an outgoing S&T by a luxury-tax paying team?

FWIW, if components A and B are combined, the resulting TE would be about $4.8 million, I think.

Let make some comparison

A. Pierce for Humphries and Kris Joseph...inappropriate not well for Cs team, PPp was the captain and very good scorer
B. KG for Wallace...not good for Cs team, because KG is much better defensive player
C. Terry for Bogans...50-50
D. DJ White for Brooks 50-50 but does not change anything

So, the game winner is Prokorov

Why wouldn't the C's do it as one big deal? All splitting the deals up does is diminish the trade exception.

I am not sure I trust this nets blog that seems to be the only source to have the exact number. I think it'll end up being closer to 5 MM.

I think a 5 MM trade exception plus three first is pretty fair for Kg Pierce and Terry.

And that this trade isn't about getting equal value player to player... It's about assets and picks for two players in their mid 30s
