I don't think Oden makes sense, for this reason: He either is going to get injured right away, which would be a waste of money; or he will play great for a year or two, and then get injured again.  That would stink, because it would devalue our first round picks, and we would end up without a center anyway. The chances are incredibly slim, and not worth the gamble, that he will be productive for 5 plus years. Pass.

I think the need is there and the risk is totally worth it. IF he pans out and his major injuries are in the past, he could be everything that [we are] looking to trade Rondo for. If he has another major injury, what do we lose since we aren't contending this year anyway?

I realize that he probably won't be the force that he was expected to be, but there is no reason to believe he couldn't be an above average starting center (again, with the huge caveat that he is healthy).

I'm kind of annoyed that we aren't going after Oden harder.  Maybe he's a total bust... but I think it's something that could totally bite us later on.  We could regret not taking the chance.

Respectfully disagree. If the Celts are truly rebuilding, then that would be the perfect time to take a chance on a guy like Oden because you almost have nothing to lose. If he pans out, then great! If not, then it just means a better chance of landing a higher draft pick the following year. But it doesn't look like he's coming here regardless.

I would agree that he will never become a 35 minute a night player.

At this juncture, the best you can hope for Oden is that he becomes a serviceable back-up that can play 15 minutes a night.

We need players who are relatively healthy and young, who can grow and develop.  I wish Oden the best--in Cleveland.  We need to groom talent not light candles hoping Greg will stay healthy. 

Thank the basketball gods we never landed him.  Let's not tempt fate. 

Would love to see him contribute to the Cavs and watch his size give the Heat fits.  I think he's truly be appreciated there and if I remember correctly its his home.  Would be a great story.

Oden is a huge risk.  And we can't afford that right now while in rebuild mode.  Miami can afford to take risks because they are contenders.  We need all the cap space we can get.  Oden ain't coming to Boston.  He has better teams to choose from anyways if he wants to win.

We CAN afford afford it now because we are in rebuild mode. We should be taking risks with high payoff.

The problem with the premise of the OP is that the poster does not know Danny's level of effort. Clearly we have shown interest and talked to them based on agent comments. On the other hand, Oden gets to make the choice for himself.

Oden is an easy all star if he can get on the court. Best case for all our bigs is nowhere near Oden. And I always point to Grant Hill's 2 season of no missed games in Phoenix (in his late 30s no less) as an example of someone finally healing from what was thought to be career ending injuries.

No one has ever said that Oden is in a Brandon Roy position where he is hurt to the point of no recovery.
