Negative Nancy's need not respond.  The Celtics are likely tanking this year and have no foreseeable cap space for at least another few years.  Greg Oden is 100% worth the risk. I'm not sure what we can offer him, but assuming we have the MLE, I'd gladly offer Greg a 3 year fully guaranteed MLE.  As long as we have Rondo, Jeff Green, Gerald Wallace, Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee filling up the cap, it really doesn't matter.

We aren't competing for a title... if Greg is a little raw, it doesn't matter.  We have a team full of young guys like Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and fellow OSU alum Jared Sullinger that we are developing.  We have a boy genius coach who is signed on to a 6 year deal.  There is ZERO pressure to perform here in the short-term, Greg.  Our fans are fully prepared for a tankjob.  We fully anticipate a lot of losses this year.  Come to Boston, try to get healthy with Rondo and Sully... and maybe help us build a new dynasty long-term. No pressure, Greg.  Come join the family.

Honestly, I still think Greg has tremendous potential if he's healthy.  Let's be straight here... we don't know if he'll be healthy ever.  Greg probably doesn't even know.  But let's not act like this guy is a guaranteed bust loser who stunk up the joint in the NBA.   He played a total of 82 NBA games in his short-lived career.  Here's his per-36 minute numbers:  15 points, 12 rebounds, 2.3 blocks on 57% shooting.  In the 21 games he played during his second season, he was putting up per-36 numbers of 17 points, 13 rebounds, 3.4 blocks on 60% shooting and 77% from the line.   His only real issue (aside from the obvious horrible luck with injuries) was that he was MAJORLY foul prone.  He was averaging 6+ fouls per 36 minutes.  He hadn't caught up to the speed of the NBA game, and I really dont' blame him.  I don't think he was ever healthy for a training camp or pre-season.  He couldn't stay on the floor, because he was still adjusting to to pace of the NBA game... and that's something that time would absolutely help with.  We saw the same thing with Kendrick Perkins during his fisrt couple years... 6+ fouls per 36 minutes... and then gradually declined to less than 4.

GREG... COME TO BOSTON!  All the fans here are sipping Kelly Olynyk coolaid anyways.  You can blend in here without any pressure to succeed... and there's the long-shot possibility that you would be THE key piece to a very exciting young team that can actually perform.

At the very least, please don't sign with Miami.  You'll lose your soul, Greg.  Your soul!

Oden is a huge risk.  And we can't afford that right now while in rebuild mode.  Miami can afford to take risks because they are contenders.  We need all the cap space we can get.  Oden ain't coming to Boston.  He has better teams to choose from anyways if he wants to win.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I would love this move.
It's a risk but rebuilding time is the moment where you have to take risks. I'm all for it.

He's not a huge risk.  WE're tanking.  Wallace is on the books for 3 years.  There's no cap space in our future.  If we signed Greg to the full MLE or something, there's really no real risk.  What's the worst that happens?... we're over the cap even more?  We lose games?  Lol.  Who cares.

100% worth it.  Potential huge payoff.  We are rebuilding... Oden is still raw.  He fits in very well with a developing young nucleus.  And if he cant' stay healthy, oh well.  We were trying to tank for Wiggins anyways.

wrong assumptions on both parts imo.

#1, how is he a huge risk? He's not asking for Bynum money, and we are not contending in the next 2-3 years, taking a chance on young players with potential is what this time is all about. Signing him is the logical, safe choice.

#2. Oden doesn't want to win now, he's not an aging vet that has made his money and is looking for a ring, he's a young guy who never got his career on track, he wants money, and a chance to slowly rebuild his game and then get a full opportunity to start when ready, in a low pressure situation, again, the celtics are a smart choice here.

If the Celtics didn't re-sign Bradley and found a team to absorb the expiring contract of Brandon Bass without taking salary back, the Celtics would probably be able to have the cap space to sign a max free agent, if one were available, despite having Rondo/Green/Wallace/Lee under contract.  The claim of no foreseeable cap space for at least another few years is incorrect.

Why not, I mean we are paying Kris Humphries 12 mil dollars this year.
Greg is worth the risk if he can stay healthy.

I think Oden is one of the few players that it would make sense to invest in at this point with some or all of the MLE (although I would really push for the second year at a team option), for 2 reasons.

First, it is low risk, high reward.  As long as Danny can get them below the luxury tax (which I feel confident he can do.  Someone would take on a guy like Lee, if he wants to just dump him, or something like that).  So the only real risk would be of Wyc's money...and I think a lot of that can be made up through marketing a guy like Oden (more like that coming up).

On the court, there is really no risk.  If he stinks, or is hurt, then they are just right where they are right now, and in position to possibly tank.

But, if he ends up being healthy, and playing well, suddenly you have created a new asset out of thin air, to either build around, or try to get value for.  And if he plays really well, suddenly this team could be a really interesting team in the East, assuming Rondo is healthy.

But the second reason is the key one to me.  He is the type of player that can turn what could be a boring, mediocre (or tanking) team into an exciting team with a reason to watch.  The C's really are lacking exciting young players that draw in fans (maybe Olynyk, but we will have to see).  The kind of guys that make fans think "OK, this guy could help turn around this franchise".  But Oden has that kind of potential.

I think you could really market Oden, in order to sell some of the tickets that are going to be unsold at the moment with no KG and Pierce.  And even beyond ticket sales, he will just create a buzz around the team that isn't there right now.

Of course, this also comes down to where Oden wants to go, but I think the C's have a strong case.  They give him an opportunity to start at center, but in a lower pressure situation, where they won't be trying to forcefeeding him minutes right away, or counting on him in an intense playoff race.  So, he can come back at his own pace.

They also have a fellow Ohio State guy in Sullinger, who I believe has worked out with Oden in the past (not positive, but I think I saw something about that).  And even their new coach has ties to Indiana where Oden is from.

So, I for one am hanging my hat on this potential signing as, perhaps not a franchise saver...but it could be what keeps me extra focussed on this team next year.

Throw in he's not really worth the risk.
a) if he bombs - he's wasted money and a wasted roster spot.
b) if he succeeds, he hurts next year's draft position and doesn't make us a contender so jettisoning PP and KG didn't really accomplish much for this coming season.  This only pans out for the C's if he becomes the stud he was projected to be and acquires and incredible loyalty to Boston where he sticks around for his next contract without demanding a max deal.

all in. greg did the right thing taking a full season off to FULLY heal up. the right environment and a team with good management (nix Bobcats) is the best situation. joining forces with the likes of rondo, green, avery, sully, olynyk and Lee is the way to go. he will be one of the guys on an even playing field, not a two bit hired gun for the Heat or Spurs or something.

He's high reward.

He can be part of the core while we are rebuilding. If we can offer him a ton of money but with Andrew Bynum-like parameters like little guaranteed money and a team option, I don't mind having his potential.

At worst, if he's healthy, at worst he's a very good defensive Center who will block shots and rebound the ball for you. He already showed he can operate down low too.

I'd give him the same Bynum deal. Full MLE with half of it is guaranteed and a team option in two years.

If we could get Oden on a incentive based contract I'm 100% for it.  I have always really liked Oden, he has had unfortunate luck.  He would be leagues best C right now if he was healthy.

The great thing about Oden is that he satisfies the tanking and non tanking crowds. If he is ready immediately and 100% healthy he can start for us and be a building block of the future, if he won't be ready by the time the season starts then we are in the lottery and getting a high pick. Win/Win

100% on board if the C's can somehow snag GO.  There is no downside.  People who say that we wont be bad enough if he plays well just don't get it.  If he does have a great season and turns out to be an impact player then we are one step closer to our rebuild.

Oden (healthy and playing well)/

would be a nice start to a young rebuild.
