Assuming the Celtics don't make a deal to add another wing, it looks like Gerald Wallace should have the job as long as he is one the roster (and he should be on the roster rather than using an asset like a draft pick to dump his contract).  Kris Joseph is the youth/tanking option, but I am not sure he will even be on the regular-season roster.  Keith Bogans will be an option.  The Celtics could go with Courtney Lee or some sort of three-guard lineup.  Those are the options if there are no other major roster shake-ups.

I think Wallace should be given a defined role of backing up Jeff Green.  He admitted that he was suffering from a lack of confidence and a lack of knowing what his role was on his team last season.  I think Kris Joseph, if he isn't waived, should be on track to play in the D-League, but with the opportunity to earn playing time.  That could change based on training camp performance.  Since Wallace has a history of missing games, Joseph will probably get his chance if he is patient and works hard.  I'd be looking to flip Bogans to a playoff team that could use a defense-oriented back-up wing as soon as he is eligible to be traded.   I'd only go with Lee if I were going small with something like a Rondo/Bradley/Lee/Green/big lineup.

Maybe a summer league guy or a camp invitee can slide into that Kris Joseph role of likely D-League fodder who has a shot of earning playing time.

Is there a good reason that this shouldn't be how the Celtics plan on handling the back-up SF job?

Wallace at PF??? We need to develop our young PFs and Centers. I'd rather a lineup of Rondo, Bradley, Green, Bass, Olynyk. That way Wallace can come off the bench and be a leader for our 2nd team. Thats his identity right there

I'd like to see Sully start at PF, and KO at C.  That pushes Crash down to backup SF, with Humphries being first big man off the bench.

Something like:

PG: Rajon Rondo, ?
SG: Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, MarShon Brooks, Jordan Crawford
SF: Jeff Green, Gerald Wallace, Keith Bogans, Kris Joseph
PF: Jared Sullinger, Brandon Bass, Shavlik Randolph, D.J. White
C: Kelly Olynyk, Kris Humphries, Fab Melo

Man, that's a mismatched roster.

I'm kinda envisioning Wallace as the first SF/PF off the bench, whichever is needed first.

It kinda gives continuity to Green's role.

That said, I also like Green playing alongside Wallace, so I have no problem with starting Wallace either.

I am inclined to keep Olynyk in a reserve role. Protect him from more difficult matchups and let him grow from there. I think starting him and exposing him to those more difficult assignments so early could do more harm than good.

I just don't know coming off injury we should push Sully into starting minutes. Plus starting two young players one a rookie in our front court may prove to be hurtful for their games. Bass would really help KO because he could take the defensive slack on the bigger player ofthe opposing frontcourt.

Wow look at our bench though. Wallace, Sully, Lee, Crawford, Humprhies and Marshon Brooks. Vets and Young energy players. Along with a high volume scorer in Crawford.

I think the main problem I have with that lineup is KO at the 5.  I know we need to get him minutes to develop, but I really wonder if playing him big minutes at the 5 would be bad for his development.  I dont think he is a center in the nba.

Same issue with sully I know.   But maybe flip Sully and KO and have Sully at the 5.  I am more convinced that KO can exploit match ups as a stretch 4 than I am with sully, especially with no kg to help him on D.  KO has no hops, so the bigger shot blocking centers worry me with him.

I really think we need to get at least a journeyman center to plug some minutes at the 5 while sully and KO develop.  I don't really care where Wallace plays.  If he is quick enough to back up green at the 3 great, if not I don't care.  I don't see Wallace in our long term plans.  Kris J at the backup 3 fine.  Let him get some burn and see if he can be trade fodder later.

I agree, maybe let him be the backup. 4 that brings the scoring.  Problem is he may have to play more minutes until sully is recovered.

if we had wiggins, he'd be starting and we'd trade green for another need.

I prefer Randle.

If this was 2007 again, and we got the 5th pick with this draft class, it might not feel like the end of the world.
