I think it would fix the problem. Wiggins probably would have been a 2007 2nd round pick.

That's a really, really interesting idea and I like it a lot. You would also allow teams to draft the rights to players who did not declare, of course. It certainly would widen the field.

I wonder how high school prospects would feel going to college knowing an NBA team already had their rights. They might be disinclined to play for their college teams... I'm all for it, of course, because I think the NCAA is a criminal organization and that 18 year olds should be allowed to make their money.

I wonder how young speculating teams would go.

it should just be eliminated, period.  if someone is a legal adult and a team is willing to draft/sign them because they think they are worthy, then they should be able to do so.  the one year in college or out of hs thing is stupid, it only delays it one year.  if you want to set an age limit, make it legit.

it wouldn't eliminate tanking at all.  Teams would still try to get the worst record but now they'd be doing it to get the best prospect of any age.  want to see a new wave of players in the NBA feeling entitled?  let them get drafted at the age you're proposing for Wiggins.

if you're thinking the bad teams will pick players that are more ready to contribute, you give the power teams the opportunity to draft for 4-6 years down the road in the anticipation of getting players like Wiggins when they're current stars are in decline or on the way out of town

either way, it's a losing proposition

Still don't understand why some people here feel it's an urgent need to get rid of tanking. The current system is perfectly fine.

It would be like Hockey, Baseball ect. How good are your scouts at projecting. Heck, I would be for drafting players that aren't even born yet.

With the 55th pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, The Boston Celtics select... The 1st born son of Kevin Durant and Monica Wright.

Makes the league less about tanking (and occasionally rigging) and more about good GMs doing their jobs right.

No.

What they need is to extend rosters, and create a better sort of farm system were teams can stash players who are not ready to play without them taking roster spots from better and legit NBA players.

That's exactly how I feel about it.

It should also be worked out to where some players are advised to stay in school for 4 years to develop, and still have some type of financial safety net. Anyway, smarter people than me could work out the details. It just needs to be done.

Seventh Woods probably would have been drafted this year:

Enable the league to punish teams for the mere suspicion of tanking without any hard evidence, so that teams will bend over backwards to avoid any appearance of tanking that might cause the commissioner to fine the team with the loss of a draft pick.

it would increase tanking and middle schoolers would fill up the top 20 picks.

I just think we have come to that point where it makes sense.

I don't think so, it will depend on team need, approach, strategy. There would a whole lot less emphasis on the draft and a whole lot more about the system, scouting and development.
